Symposium Content The number of elements in the periodic table is more than 100 but for practical application is restricted to 60~80. Modern society strongly depends on high performance materials based on the less common or toxic elements such as dysprosium for strong magnets in motors, indium for transparent electrodes in flat panel displays, cadmium for solar cells and lead for ferroelectrics. Realization of the important materials function without using rare/toxic elements is a grand challenge for chemistry. Innovative chemical approaches and collaborative work with solid state physicists beyond traditional discipline are highly demanding. The last two decades have witnessed concentrated research on nanoscience and nanotechnology with the expectation that a new frontier for rare-element substitutes would open. The full utilization of their unique electronic structures arising from their novel molecular arrangements, nanostructure, and surface/interface is expected to be a key enabler for this new technology. This symposium will present the current status and challenges for rare element-free electronic materials including: (1) theoretical designing novel materials; and (2) research on developing new functional materials with conducting, catalytic, magnetic, ferroelectric, and optical properties. The technical sessions will be made from invited speakers including key researchers from nationally-funded projects in the Pacific Rim and contributed papers.
