THE INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK
Purpose of the Notebook ◦ To enable you to be an independent, creative thinker and writer. ◦ It’s a place for you to organize your notes, thoughts, and show individual creativity. ◦ Most of your information from this class will be in this notebook, with the exception of lab handouts and other material deemed important by the teacher. ◦ So, let’s get started by discussing how you will use it to succeed in this class.
What can you use your notebook for? ◦ Have most of your information in ONE place of reference. ◦ Transform written concepts into visuals (for visual learners) ◦ Find main points of a lesson or content ◦ Draw whatever illustration makes sense to you: acrostics, Venn diagram, word maps, other graphic organizers, mnemonic devices, comic strip, cartoons, letters, poetry, etc… ◦ Personalize the lesson ◦ Much, much more…
Notebook ◦ Any notebook will do: composition or spiral ◦ Should have a cover, secure binding, and blank pages ◦ Your notebook will stay in this room, unless you are studying for a test or you have permission from the teacher to take it home. ◦ It is imperative you have your notebook every day because it is where you will take your notes, write your ideas, record parts of the Scientific Method, etc… ◦ You may come and look at or work on it during study hall in the mornings.
The Table of Contents- should be your first 4 pages Table of Contents Date Topic Page Now to get started… On the first page, write Table of Contents at the top. Label the column on the left as the date column. Label the next column as the Topic column. Label the far column to the right as the Page column. You are responsible for keeping up with your table of contents!
On the inside cover, you should have written your name and class period. ◦ Example: ◦ Mrs. Darnell ◦ I am giving you a couple of items to paste into the front cover as well: ◦ Science 2 A ◦ 1) Costa Questions information ◦ 2) My personal information, so it’s in a readily accessible place to you and you can record it at any time. ◦ You will also be receiving a grading rubric for your notebook. This rubric will be used to determine your notebook grade per quarter. It counts as a TEST GRADE.
Now, number your pages in the upper right hand corner. All of them. Start on the first page on the right after the inside cover. 1, 2, 3, etc…
Now, as you use your notebook, you are going to only do certain types of work on each side of the page. Left Page (even numbers) ◦ The creative side: ◦ ◦ Picture vocabulary Graphs, charts, data Illustrations Summary (5 -7 sentences) Right page (odd numbers) ◦ Objective for the day ◦ Warm-up ◦ Class notes (in Cornell style) ◦ Any activities designated by the teacher ◦ Exit ticket/Reflection
Cornell Notes Will be maintained on the right side of the notebook. Stimulate critical thinking skills Help remember what is said in class Help you prepare for tests Organize and process data and information
Cornell notes, cont. When taking notes, you start by writing the date in the upper right hand corner, under your page number. Write the objective for the day at the top. Draw a vertical line down the left side about 2 -21/2 inches from the edge. Class notes are taken on the right of the line. Skip a line between ideas and topics. Do not use complete sentences. On the left, you will be writing main topics being covered and Costa questions after reviewing the notes you have taken.
In the left column you will develop Costa questions. ◦ They help you prepare for what may be on a test, study the content learned, and review on your own. ◦ You MUST write a Costa question from each of the three levels for each day of class notes to receive full credit. ◦ Let’s go over what Costa questions are and practice.
AFTER WRITING THE COSTA QUESTIONS… WRITE A SUMMARY ON THE BOTTOM OF THE LEFT HAND PAGE ◦ SHOULD ADDRESS THE DAY’S OBJECTIVE AND MAIN IDEAS (5 -7 SENTENCES) ◦ AT ANY POINT, AS LONG AS YOU ARE NOT TAKING NOTES, YOU CAN USE THE LEFT SIDE TO HELP YOU PROCESS WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED. ◦ DRAW CHARTS OR DIAGRAMS, MAKE AN ILLUSTRATION, WRITE A JOURNAL ENTRY ABOUT HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT WHAT YOU LEARNED…
