The INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION Quaestio: Why did the Industrial Revolution start in Britain? Nunc Agenda: Read pages 612 -613 and answer the first checkpoint.

Historical Circumstances Britain had tons of natural resources and favorable geography. Rivers supplied water power and canal trade which brought in materials. � Huge population was crucial by allowing for lots of labor in what we would see today as factories and mines. � Demand for new inventions and materials were aspired leading them to work. � Capitals, money accumulated to be used in enterprises such as shipping or mining, were also starting to grow. � Uninterrupted trade was also important as trade flowed smoothly allowing for materials to come easily and out. �

During The Revolution • Inventors, entrepreneurs, and investors influenced the Industrial Revolution. • Mechanical engineer George Stephenson made major contributions to the revolution by manufacturing the steam engine for its use as trains to cheaply carry supplies. • Important railway pioneer Joseph Locke was a civil engineer who developed new techniques for laying rails. • Innovations such as the steam engine, cheaper iron production, and the establishment of advanced machinery made up the revolution.

Effects of this Revolution Urbanization, people move to cities and alter the population. � New social classes including todays term of middle and working class. � Labor unions are formed to reform work conditions. � Methodism was brought among angry workers looking for a new better view of life as workers. � Created more jobs, mass production, increased wages, cost of transportation had dropped. These changes allowed for new opportunities to be experienced by the average citizen. �
