The Induction of newly qualified teachers ebriefing session
The Induction of newly qualified teachers e-briefing session for new NQT Induction tutors 2020
Objectives for the briefing 1. To develop a clear understanding of statutory guidance for NQT induction and processes. 2. To explore the NQT induction tutor’s role and responsibilities 3. To explain the expectations of monitoring, support and assessment during the induction period 4. To understand what action to take if there are concerns about an NQT’s progress and informing the Appropriate body. 5. Provide a forum to ask questions
NQT- the induction process (1) Induction is a statutory process; - bridge between initial teacher training a career. Eligibility Before taking up post the school must undertake pre –employment checks which are verified by the AB upon registration (para 2. 9) Qualified teacher status Full QTS. We will need an NQT’s TRA number and Date of Birth to verify QTS. NQTs cannot start induction or be registered with TRA without passing their university course Start date for induction The start date for induction will be determined by the AB and must be agreed in advance with head teacher and NQT (see later slide for registration dates) Eligibility to carry out short term supply (less than one term) It is not possible to back date the start of an induction period if a short term contract is extended. An NQT can carry out short term supply for up to 5 years. Short term supply posts do not count towards induction.
NQT- the induction process • Suitability The NQT must have a suitable post for induction - no unreasonable demands made on NQTs • Reduced timetable (additional non contact time in addition to statutory 10% PPA time) • Support and CPD; designated induction co-ordinator, personalised programme of professional development and support including regular observations and feedback

Roles and Responsibilities-in school (2) • Head teacher along with the AB is jointly responsible for monitoring support and assessments of NQTs • NQTs participate fully in the induction programme, monitoring their own progress, raise any concerns about their induction • Governing Body ensure school compliance with statutory guidance, be informed about arrangements for induction • Induction tutor provide guidance and effective support including coaching and mentoring for NQTs professional development
Role of tutor • Organising and implementing an individual programme of professional development • Ensuring appropriate support, monitoring and assessment takes place a various points throughout the induction year • Arranging and conducting half termly review meeting with NQTs as part of their formative assessment • • Providing regular well founded feedback to the NQT on their progress • Maintaining a written record of support, monitoring and assessment for the NQT • • Arrange for additional support for the NQT if necessary Making formal observations of teaching at least once every half term and providing accurate and constructive feedback Skills audit for new tutors–knowledge, skills and expertise
Monitoring, support and assessment (3) Structuring the induction NQT timeline- what will you do with your NQT’s – how will it develop across the year? -suggestions in handbook
Personalised programme of support A personalised programme combines development, support and professional dialogue with monitoring and an assessment of performance against standards • Take into account – Any experience since initial teacher training – NQTs will have lost time in their initial teacher training due to coronavirus pandemic - how can you best to support in their first few weeks – The context of the school and NQT’s teaching groups – Whole school training and development – Agreed objectives
Classroom observation and professional reviews Statutory requirements • NQTs observed at regular intervals (6 -8 weeks) • Professional discussion and review of teaching • Feedback prompt and constructive • Brief written feedback – indicating any developmental points • Induction tutor should not be the only person to observe the NQT • The induction tutor should review the NQT’s progress at frequent intervals. • NQTs should record evidence of progress
What actions might you plan to support your NQT… Joint observations of other teachers (Mentor and NQT together) to guide NQT in what they are looking for. Utilise strengths in school – this doesn’t always need to be you! Do a book look together. Support your NQT to reflect on progress or marking for example. NQT to record themselves – review together an element of their teaching practice. Model lessons or parts of lessons with the NQT’s class, ready to discuss the strategies they observed you using. Opportunity to be part of or do learning walks together. Useful if comparing different approaches to behaviour management for example. Co-planning – work with your NQT to plan lessons to demonstrate what you are looking for. Team teach – teach alongside your NQT. Sometimes a particular focus is helpful.
Content of the assessment report • Open with a judgment of NQTs progress against the standard • Strengths and areas of development or where improvements are required against specific standards • Evidence; strengths within the lesson observation or a list of sources at the end of a section e. g. Lesson plans; pupil reports; feedback meetings; review meetings; learning walks;
Completing assessments Tutor NQT
The assessment process • Assessment available 3 weeks before due date • Tutor write assessment; NQT reads and digitally signs it • Head teacher signs the report • NQT report uploaded for NQT induction lead to read, comment and sign off
Recommendation • First and second reports clearly show assessment of an NQT’s performance at the time of their assessment and make a recommendation about NQT’s rate of progress. • Final assessment recommends that whether or not the NQT’s performance against the standards is satisfactory, unsatisfactory or whether or not an extension should be considered. This recommendation should be recorded on a final assessment form. ()
Action in the case of concerns about an NQT’S progress (4) Concern triggers • • Unsatisfactory lesson observations Poor behaviour management Low standards of personal and professional conduct Communication issues ; parents pupils other staff Failure to follow school guidelines policies rules and expectations Failure to meet targets or over preparation without the desired effect Pupil outcomes show low expectations Time management /work life balance Actions for induction tutors • • • Accurately identify the area for improvement and communicate to NQT in writing Set appropriate objectives with detailed action planning, support and monitoring Keep Appropriate body informed Ensure an ‘independent professional’ observes the NQT Contact unions T h i s P h o t o b y U n k n o w n A u t h o r i s l i c e n s e d
Role of the Appropriate Body • • • To provide advice, guidance and support on all aspects of induction • To provide the TRA with details of NQT’s who have started: completed (satisfactory or not) those who require an extension or those who have left partway through an induction period • To offer an ‘Independent person’ for NQT’s to discuss any difficulties or issues with their induction • To support when NQT’s are failing to make satisfactory progress against teacher’s standards including quality assuring all aspects of the induction process in school • To respond to requests for assistance and advice with training for Induction tutors. To monitor termly and final assessments Ensure that NQT’s records and assessment reports are maintained (for 6 years) NQTs should also keep copies of their records.
Government aims to strengthen QTS and teacher career development The changes include: • Extending the induction period to two years (rather than one) after which QTS is awarded • The ECF underpins an entitlement to a fully funded, two year package of structured training and support for early career teachers. The package of reforms will ensure new teachers have dedicated time set aside to focus on their development • Ways to improve mentoring arrangements for NQTs.
