INTRODUCTION Ø Constitution is a set of laws or rules by which a country is governed. Ø The term “Constitution” is derived from the Latin word “constitute” means to establish. Ø According to George Cornwell Lewis “Constitution is the arrangement and distribution of sovereign power in the community or the form of government. ” Ø Really constitution is a basic design which deals with the structure and powers of the govt. including the rights and duties of the citizens. NEED OF A CONSTITUTION v. To know the powers and duties of the govt. as well as of the citizens. v. To protect the rights of the citizens. v. To establish the principle of “Rule of Law”. v. To save the country from anarchy. v. To define the operation or functioning of sovereign powers of the govt. v. MAKING OF INDIAN CONSTITUTION § Indian constitution has been prepared by the constituent assembly. § Constituent assembly was consisted of 385 members, of which 292 were the elected representatives from the provincial states and 93 were nominated. § Dr. S N Sinha was the first temporary president of constituent assembly but the elected president was Dr. Rajendra Prasad. § Dr. B R Ambedkar was the chairman of the drafting committee. § Our constitution was adopted on 26 th Nov. 1949 but it was enacted on 2 th January 1950. § Thus, it took a time of 2 years, 11 months and 18 days. PREAMBLE OF INDIAN CONSTITUTION �The preamble of the Indian constitution is a brief introductory statement that sets out guidelines, which guide the people of the nation and present the principles of the constitution and to indicate the source from which the documents derives its authority and meaning. �The preamble can be referred to as the preface which highlights the entire constitution. FEATURES OF INDIAN CONSTITUTION v The Indian constitution is the largest written constitution of the world. v It has 395(now more than 448) articles, 22 (now 25)parts and 8 (now 12) schedules. v It is an example of flexible as well as rigid constitution. v It is a mixture of many constitutions of the world. v There is inclusion of fundamental rights and duties of Indian citizens. v There is inclusion of Directive Principles of State Policy. v it makes India a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic. v It establishes parliamentary democracy.
