The Importance Of Light Do 2
Pre- Discussion 1. What do plants require for photosynthesis to occur? Plants require carbon dioxide, water, and light for photosynthesis to occur.
Pre-Discussion 2. How could you test whether or not plants actually need carbon dioxide or water or light in order for photosynthesis to occur?
Pre-Discussion 3. What evidence would indicate photosynthesis had occurred?
Question Is light needed for photosynthesis to occur?
Variables • IV: Light • DV: Photosynthesis, Presence of Oxygen • CV: Type of plant, Same amount of light exposure for the plant in the light, same set-up
Hypothesis If a plant is kept in light, then oxygen will be produced, because the plant can perform photosynthesis. If a plant is kept in dark conditions, then no photosynthesis can occur, because the plant needs light to perform this process. This also means that no oxygen is produced.
Material Complete the list once all the material is at your table
Procedure Follow each step of the procedure correctly! Read before you do! Why is baking soda (Na. HCo 3) used? ? It provides CO 2
Critical Steps 8 through 11 are critical steps. Make sure you read carefully and fully understand what to do. Ask for help!
Post Investigation 1. What collected in the test tubes of each setup? Oxygen in the test tubes of the plants with light and another gas (carbon dioxide) in the tubes without light Oxygen is flammable and makes the splint relight. The other gas did not make the splint relight
Post Investigation 1. How did you know the gas in the tube was or was not oxygen? 2. How does oxygen collecting in the tube indicate photosynthesis has occurred? . Oxygen is released by plants as a product of the process of photosynthesis. The mouth of the tube was underwater and filled with water. 1. Gas from the air could not have entered the tube. The oxygen was produced as a result of leaving the plant in light and collected in the tube as the plant released the oxygen.
