The Impact of Make-Up The Joker’s make-up consists of red lipstick that extends to his cheeks, a white painted face and black face paint around his eyes. He is probably shown wearing so much make-up so when he takes it off, he can’t be recognised. This implies that The Joker is mysterious and has something to hide. The way The Joker looks is scary because he doesn’t appear the same way as other clowns do. This suggests that he is different and probably more dangerous; which creates tension as the audience do not know what he might do in the film. Furthermore, he always has a smile drawn on his face, causing the viewer to think that he is unhappy as he does not have a natural smile. The use of red lipstick fits into the horror genre as the colour connotes death and danger. The black face paint around his eyes might represent the darkness of his soul/personality and how evil he is. Also, as they are darkened, it makes his eyes look more piercing and scary. His white face connotes innocence, peace and purity whereas the black eyes connotes danger, death and hatred. These two elements of his face contrast which could imply that he was once a good person and was pure but later turned villainous. As the black paint is over the white paint, it could suggest that darkness and corruption has taken over his body. The Joker also has green hair which could suggest jealousy and as opposed to red, also connotes safety. This is juxtaposed with the rest of The Joker’s appearance traits which may suggest he is a complex character.
