ACT III-IV
§ Banquo thinks about Macbeth becoming king & witch's prophesies. § Banquo feeling ambitious- thinks that since Macbeth’s prophesy came true (he became king) that his will also come true (his sons will someday be king). § Banquo and ambition? § Macbeth and Lady Macbeth enter and ask him to come to their feast at the castle. § Banquo agrees. § Macbeth tells Banquo that they need to figure out what they are going to do about Donalbain and Malcolm. § Worried they are plotting against them.
§ Everyone leaves. § Macbeth talks to a servant about men who have come to see him. § He tells the servant to bring the men to him. § Macbeth’s Soliloquy: § Thinks about Banquo and how much he fears him. § Thinks about the witch’s prophesy: Knows that if they continue to be right, he will not have an heir to his thrown (foreshadowing what? ) § Wonders if him killing Duncan was just creating another problem for him Banquo’s sons will kill him and overthrow his family.
§ Servant brings Macbeth two visitors. § Men are murderers that he has hired. § Macbeth told the men everything that Banquo has done wrong. § Macbeth is trying to make the murderers angry at Banquo. Angry enough to kill him. (do his dirty work for him) § Men say that they will kill Banquo. § Macbeth tells them that they must also kill Fleance and his father.
§ Lady Macbeth asks servant to get Macbeth for her. § Macbeth comes and tells Lady Macbeth that his “mind is full of scorpions. ” § Feels like business isn’t complete because of the lingering possibility of threats to the throne. § Macbeth tells Lady Macbeth that Banquo will be their next victim. § He tells her to be extra nice to him during the feast so that Banquo will not suspect anything…
§ Macbeth’s castle. § Murderers wait outside. § Banquo and Fleance arrive at the castle. § Murderers kill Banquo. § Banquo tells his son to flee and avenge his death. § Fleance escapes. § Murderers leave to tell Macbeth what happened.
§ Macbeth and Lady Macbeth enter feast as king and queen. § Macbeth sees murderer standing in doorway. § Murderer tells Macbeth that Banquo is dead and Fleance escaped. § Macbeth gets mad. § Knows that if Fleance was dead, he wouldn't have to worry about anyone taking over his throne. § Goes to sit at the table and sees Banquo’s ghost in his seat. § Macbeth starts talking to the ghost. § Lady Macbeth gets embarrassed that her husband is appearing to talk to himself. § Starts to make excuses for him.
§ Lady Macbeth tells the guests that Macbeth sometimes has visions. § Lady Macbeth whispers to Macbeth questioning his manhood and urging him to get it together. § Ghost disappears; Macbeth is back to normal. § Macbeth goes to make a toast and the ghost of Banquo reappears. § Macbeth gets very shaken up and freaked out. § Lady Macbeth, embarrassed again, tries to smooth over what is happening by making excuses for Macbeth. § She sends the guests out of the room until Macbeth gets it together. § Macbeth tells Lady Macbeth that he will go visit witches again to find out who will be a problem for them in the future. § Says he will do whatever necessary to keep his title/power.
§ Stormy night. § Witches meet with Hecate (goddess of witchcraft) § Hecate is mad that they got themselves involved in Macbeth’s business without asking her. § Hecate says she will now be supervisor and will dictate how they create mischief. § Says that when Macbeth comes they must fill him with a false sense of security by creating visions and spirits with mixed messages. (create confusion; manipulation; double speak) § Witches leave to prepare.
§ Scotland. § Lennox walks with a lord. § Men discuss what is happening to the kingdom. § Banquo’s murder blamed on Fleance. § Fleance fled. § Even though murder is pinned on Fleance, Lennox and lord feel like Macbeth killed him. § Call Macbeth a tyrant. § Lord tells Lennox- Macduff went to England to meet Malcom so they can beg England's King Edward for help. § Macbeth finds out. Wants to start war. § Lennox and lord hope Malcolm and Macduff can save Scotland from Macbeth.
§ Witches circle cauldron chanting spells and adding ingredients into cauldron. § Hecate appears and is happy with the witches and their work. § Macbeth enters. § Asks witches to tell him more. § Witches make: § Floating head warn him to beware of Macduff. § Bloody child tells him that “none of woman born/shall harm Macbeth” § Crowned child holding a tree tells him that he is safe until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane Hill. § Eight crowned kings walks by Macbeth. Banquo’s ghost walks at end of the line. § Macbeth gets mad and asks why they are doing this. § Witches disappear. § Lennox enters and tells Macbeth that Macduff fled to England. § Macbeth decides to send the murderers to kill Macduff’s wife and children.
§ @ Macduff’s castle. § Lady Macduff asks Ross what is going on; asks where her husband is. § She is sad. § Ross tells her that she needs to trust that everything is okay and that Macduff knows what he is doing. § Ross leaves; Lady Macduff tells her son that his father is dead. Son says he is not. § Messenger enters and tells her to be careful; says she is in danger & needs to leave. § She refuses. § Murderers enter. § Murderers stab Macduff’s son. § Lady Macduff tries to escape. Murderers chase after her.
§ In England… § Malcolm tells Macduff that he does not trust his intentions. Worries he is working for Macbeth. § Malcolm tires to test Macduff’s loyalty. § Malcolm worries whether or not he is fit to be king. He says he is lustful, greedy, and violent. § Macduff disagrees. § Eventually, he tells Malcolm that if he is all of those things, he is not fit to be king. § = Passed loyalty test. § Malcolm wanted him to respond that way. § Malcolm figured that if Macduff was okay with a greedy and violent king, he didn’t really care about Scotland.
§ Doctor enters. § Tells Malcolm and Macduff that there are some men waiting to be cured by King Edward. § King Edward is known for healing people. § Ross enters. § Tells Macduff that his wife and children are well. § Tells Malcolm to return to Scotland because of everything that is happening since Macbeth § § § became king. Malcolm says he will return with an army that he is hoping to get from the king of England to take down Macbeth. Ross finally tells Macduff the truth- tells him that Macbeth killed his wife and children. Macduff is devastated. Malcolm tries to turn his sadness to anger. Macduff promises to seek revenge on Macbeth.
