Communism & The Russian Revolution
Lets go back in time
1848 Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels write a pamphlet that would change the course of history, The Communist Manifesto. Within the work Marx and Engels outlined the growing problem of the gap between the rich and the working classes. Karl Marx
Marx and Engels believed that Capitalism was a flawed system. Under Capitalism everything is owned by individuals, who can make huge profits while the worker was forced to work long hours in poor conditions. Their solution, a new system…Communism. Under communism everything is owned and controlled by the community. Communism proclaimed that private ownership should be abolished and that Government control would protect the working class from exploitation.
The Communist Manifesto, as well as laying the foundations of an Ideology acted as a call to arms. The last line of the work states… WORKING MEN OF ALL COUNTRIES, UNIGHT!
Jump forward to 1905 The Romanov Family had ruled Russia as an Absolute Monarchy for over 300 years. Tsar Nicholas II is supreme leader of a Russia that is experiencing defeat at the hands of the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese war. What happens next will shape history as we know it today
Y SUNDA
Sunday, 22 January Unarmed demonstrators are fired upon by soldiers of the Imperial Guard as they peacefully protest for better working conditions, fairer wages and an end to the Russo-Japanese War.
Around 200 protesters are shot dead and 800 are injured in the resulting stampede. The massacre on Bloody Sunday is considered to be the start of the active phase of the revolution
A Deep Breath Following Bloody Sunday Tsar Nicholas II, in a last ditch attempt to hold on to power, agrees to appoint a parliament and draft a constitution. It works and the Tsar holds on to power
1914 WWI
Russia at War WWI was devastating for all involved. Russia mobilized 12 million soldiers and suffered catastrophic causalities. 2. 2 million dead 3. 7 million wounded 3. 3 million POWs
On The Home Front By 1917, 1. 5 million Russian civilians had died of starvation due to food shortages. Enough was enough The people, tired of war, rose up. The Revolution had begun!!
The Prodigal Son Returns Radical Vladimir Lenin returns from exile to lead the Communist Revolution
The revolution succeeds. By the end of 1917 the Tsar is overthrown and Lenin and his Communist ‘Bolshevik’ Party take control of Russia
After leading the revolution and successfully introducing Russia to Communism, in 1922 Lenin dies. . . His successor. . . Joseph Stalin
