The Identity Of Jesus Psalm 110

The Identity Of Jesus Psalm 110

Psalm 110 • Described as a “Royal Psalm” which depicts the Messiah as King

Psalm 110 • Described as a “Royal Psalm” which depicts the Messiah as King • Authored by David who himself was a king • Concerns a Priest-King, an unconventional combination in OT times • Divided into thirds (vss. 1 -3, vs. 4, vss. 5 -7) • It helps to view the Psalm by establishing the identity of Jesus in four ways

Jesus: The Superior Leader Focus – vss. 1 -2 • Sit at my right

Jesus: The Superior Leader Focus – vss. 1 -2 • Sit at my right hand (a place of honor, NLT) • Rod (scepter) belongs to Jesus • Compare Matthew 22: 41 -46 • See Colossians 1: 17 -20 This must be true in principle AND in practice …

Jesus: The Eternal Priest Focus – vs. 4 • Many see vs. 4 as

Jesus: The Eternal Priest Focus – vs. 4 • Many see vs. 4 as the central theme/aspect of the psalm 1 – God swears – it’s serious 2 – God won’t relent – it’s assured • A priest forever (that made no sense!) • According to the order of Melchizedek (see Hebrews 5: 4 -10)

Jesus: The Righteous Judge Focus – vss. 5 -6 • Justice includes an “execution”

Jesus: The Righteous Judge Focus – vss. 5 -6 • Justice includes an “execution” (literally, “shall strike through kings”) • God’s righteousness and wrath are not separate from one another - Romans 12: 19 - Matthew 10: 34 • Note three parts to vs. 6: 1 – judge among nations (heathens) 2 – fill the places with dead bodies (destruction will be complete) 3 – execution of heads of many countries (cf Daniel 2: 44 -45)

Jesus: The Triumphant Victor Focus – vs. 7 • Victory is always associated with

Jesus: The Triumphant Victor Focus – vs. 7 • Victory is always associated with the Lord and His people “He will lift His head high” (NIV) • Two ways to see the brook 1 – drinking (experiencing) pain/discomfort (drinking cup…) 2 – drinking as in refreshment because of victory • Either way, victory with Christ is assured (see 1 John 5: 4)

Jesus: A Final Observation Look at vs. 3 Your people shall be volunteers In

Jesus: A Final Observation Look at vs. 3 Your people shall be volunteers In the day of Your power; In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning, You have the dew of Your youth. • “Will be willing” (NIV) – the army of the Lord is filled with willing volunteers
