Poetry can be happy or sad.

Poetry can be fun. It can have questions or statements. Whatif Last night, while I lay thinking here, Some Whatifs crawled inside my ear And pranced and partied all night long And sang their same old Whatif song: Whatif I'm dumb in school? Whatif they've closed the swimming pool? Whatif I get beat up? Whatif there's poison in my cup? Whatif I start to cry? Whatif I get sick and die? Whatif I flunk that test? Whatif green hair grows on my chest? Whatif nobody likes me? Whatif a bolt of lightning strikes me? Whatif I don't grow taller? Whatif my head starts getting smaller?

It can be simple or fancy. This one is really fancy! You don’t have to read it. The Unicorn A long time ago, when the earth was green and there was more kinds of animals than you've ever seen, and they run around free while the world was bein' born, and the loveliest of all was the Unicorn. There were green alligators and long-neck geese. There were humpy bumpy camels and chimpanzees. There were cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born The loveliest of all was the Unicorn.

It can be really simple. This was written by a teacher when she was 10 years old. A Bird A bird came down the walk. It did not know I saw, It bit an angle worm in half, And ate the fellow raw!!!

Poems can be read quickly or slowly. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the King's horses, And all the King's men Couldn't put Humpty together again! Slowly the tide creeps up the sand, Slowly the shadows cross the land, Slowly the cart horse pulls his mile, Slowly the man mounts his stile.
