The Holy Spirit is: • NOT an ethereal influence • NOT an inner sensation • NOT a mystical force • NOT an unknowable power • NOT the might of the Almighty Father

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A DIVINE BEING

The word “spirit” (pneuma) is used in different ways. Literally means “a breeze” or “breath” • Context determines its usage “The pneuma blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the pneuma. ” (John 3: 8)

The word “spirit” (pneuma) is used in different ways. • Pronouncement of God’s judgment (2 Thess. 2: 8) • Ministering angels (Heb. 1: 14) • Man’s spirit (Acts 7: 59; Jam. 2: 26) • Capacity to perceive, feel, desire (Matt. 26: 41) • Disposition of character, attitude (1 Cor. 4: 21; 2 Tim. 1: 7) • God’s spirit (John 4: 24) • Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 10 -11, 13)

The Holy Spirit is a heavenly person with the personality of a being. He possesses characteristics of a person. • Has a mind (Rom. 8: 27) • Loves (Rom. 15: 30) • Knows (1 Cor. 2: 11) • Has a will (1 Cor. 12: 11)

The Holy Spirit is a heavenly person with the personality of a being. His work manifests personality. • Speaks (1 Tim. 4: 1) • Bears witness (John 15: 26) • Guides into truth (John 16: 13) • Searches (1 Cor. 2: 10)

The Holy Spirit is a heavenly person with the personality of a being. He suffers in ways which a person does. • Can be lied to (Acts 5: 3) • Can be blasphemed (Matt. 12: 31) • Can be insulted (Heb. 10: 29) • Can be grieved (Eph. 4: 30)

The Holy Spirit is a heavenly person with the personality of a being. But He is not just any person because He is Deity. • Eternal (Heb. 9: 14) • Omniscient (1 Cor. 2: 10 -11)

The Holy Spirit is distinct from the Father and the Son. Received communication FROM another. • The Father sent Him (John 16: 7) • The Spirit hears the Father (John 16: 13) • And takes of Christ and discloses it (John 16: 14 -15)

The Holy Spirit is distinct from the Father and the Son. Communicates CONCERNING another. • Glorifies the One who sent Him (John 16: 14) • Testifies concerning Christ (John 15: 26) • Intercedes for saints (Rom. 8: 26)

The Holy Spirit is distinct from the Father and the Son. Communicates TO another. • Convicts the world concerning sin and judgment (John 16: 8) • By showing, reminding and teaching Christ’s apostles and prophets (John 14: 26; Eph. 3: 5)
