The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament • • • Introduction The Holy Spirit was active in the world from the Creation, one of three Divine persons: Gen 1: 1 -2; 1: 26; 3: 22; 11: 7 • • As we will see, He was involved with men throughout the Old Testament: Israel in the wilderness, Judges, Kings, Prophets • • So what did the Holy Spirit do in the Old Testament? 1) The Holy Spirit Revealed God’s Will- gave Law, Neh 9: 19 -20; spoke through prophets 2 Sam 23: 2; Mic 3: 5 -8 • • 2) Holy Spirit Equipped Men for God’s Work. Building: tabernacle Ex 35: 30 -36: 1; temple Zech 4: 6 -7 Strength: Samson Judg 14: 5 -6; Saul 1 Sam 11: 5 -7 Leadership: Joshua Num 27: 18 -20; Othniel Judg 3: 9 -10; David 1 Sam 16: 13 -14; the Messiah Isa 11: 1 -2 • • 3) Holy Spirit Facilitated God’s Work- He prompted men to go, to act, to speak, sometimes leading them or carrying them (literally or in a vision) Gideon Judg 6: 33 -34, Jephthah 11: 29, Samson 14: 19; Azariah 2 Chron 15: 1 -2; Elijah 1 Kgs 18: 12; Ezekiel Eze 8: 3 & 11: 24; He even gathered wild animals to desolate Edom Isa 34: 16 -17 • 4) Holy Spirit Gave Men Signs- 70 elders- Num 11: 24 -25; Saul- 1 Sam 10: 1, 6 -7, 9 -13 • • • 5) Holy Spirit Was the Source of Blessings Received by Israel and Promised to Allrest in Canaan- Isa 63: 14; blessings return after judgment Isa 32: 12 -15; 44: 3 -4; Eze 39: 27 -29 blessings to Israel Joel 2: 25 -27 - followed by pouring out my Spirit on all mankind- 2: 28 -29 • • Invitation: Key to Pleasing God and Receiving His Blessings- Man’s Response to the Holy Spirit Contrast Israel in the wilderness Isa 63: 9 -10 with Israel after captivity Eze 36: 26 -30
