The Holy Land

The entire Land of Israel is rich with Biblical and non-Biblical history. As a believer, traveling to Israel is one of the most powerful and fulfilling things you could do. Being in the Holy Land brings to life sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures in the words that we read on the pages of the Bible. This slide show is merely a taste of what you can learn and experience from Israel. We are going to take a look at some of the places that we have been studying over the past few lessons.

Bethlehem means ‘House of Bread in Ancient Greek’. It is a city in Palestine. This is the birthplace of Jesus. Although it did not look like this all those years ago!

The Church of the Nativity was built over the spot where Jesus is thought to have been born. It was finished in 336 AD and attracts thousands of pilgrims every year.

Galilee is a large region in North Israel. Most of the land is very rocky and the temperature is low with high levels of rainfall. This is where the miracles of the loaves and fishes took place and the Sermon on the Mount (The Beatitudes). People can follow the roads that Jesus travelled.

The Sea of Galilee is the largest freshwater lake in Israel. Its main source is the River Jordan which flows through it. This is where Jesus walked on water, Calmed the storm and on its banks fed the 5000.

Nazareth is the largest city in north Israel. This city was the childhood home of Jesus. This is where the Angel Gabrielle appeared to Mary and where the Holy Family returned to after their flight to Egypt after the birth of Jesus left Nazareth when he was 30 years old.

The Jordan River flows into the Dead Sea. This is the place where Jesus’ cousin John baptised Him.

Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world. Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem on a donkey on Palm Sunday. This was where the Last Supper took place and where Jesus was crucified, died and resurrected.

This is called ‘The Cenacle’ or The Room of the Last Supper. It is in a part of the old city of Jerusalem called Mount Zion. Although this is a recreation some people believe that it was built on the place where The Last Supper took place. Jesus and his friends would have sat on cushions on the floor around a low table.

Jerusalem is also where Jesus prayed in The Garden of Gethsemane before He was arrested by the Roman soldiers. The Garden of Gethsemane is a beautiful place in the Mount of Olives. The trees pictured here are olive trees.

Here we can see people lining the path which Jesus took through Jerusalem as he carried His cross. This is called the ‘Via Dolorossa’ which translates as ‘The Way of Grief’. It is 600 m long. A Catholic procession is held here every Friday.

This is Calvary or Golgotha (meaning ‘The Place of the Skull’), which lies just outside the city walls of Jerusalem. This is the place where Jesus was crucified.

At the top of Mount Olive there is a place called Bethany. This is where Jesus Ascended into Heaven. The site is marked by a small chapel.
