Anti-Semitism is the hatred of the Jewish people.

CONSTANTINE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE ADOPTED CHRISTIANITY AND BEGAN TO ENACT CHANGES NEGATIVE TO THE JEWS SUCH AS: • Removing religious and governing privileges • Curtailment of rabbinical jurisdiction • Prohibition of Jewish missionary work • No longer allowed to hold high offices or have military careers

THE JUSTINIAN CODE SAID JEWS COULD NOT: • Build synagogues • Read Bible in Hebrew • Gather in public places • Celebrate Passover before Easter • Give evidence in a judicial case where a Christian was a party

BLOOD LIBEL AND BLACK DEATH • Blood libel – In 1144 in England it was believed that Jews murdered Christian children and used the blood to make their Passover bread. (This is ironic because consumption of blood is expressly prohibited by Jewish law. ) • Black Death, also known as the Bubonic plague, that liquidated a quarter of the population in the 14 th century was blamed on the Jews.

MARTIN LUTHER believed Jews were: • Anti-Christ • Worse than devils • Poisoners • Ritual murderers • Parasites He felt that: • they should be expelled from Germany, • synagogues should burnt to the ground, and • Jewish books should be ceased.

JEWS did not share a: • common language, • culture, • religion, • or values with any other group. During WWI, were accused of: • profiteering, • not participating in combat, • food shortages.

GENOCIDE Is the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, cultural, or religious group. Stages of genocide: • Identification • Isolation • Concentration • Annihilation
