The Holocaust
1933 -1945 With the rise of Adolf Hitler to power in Germany in 1933, the anti-Semitic feelings that underlay many European societies came to the forefront in a deadly and chaotic avalanche of Nazi-driven propaganda and brutality. The Jews, who had lived in Europe for thousands of years and suffered many pogroms and persecutions, were about to face the greatest threat to their survival they had ever known….
“If the Jews succeed in getting war declared on Germany, the result will not be the end of Nazism, but the utter destruction of the Jewish Race in Europe. ” -Adolf Hitler, 1939
Phase One: 1933 -1938
In its earliest phase, the Nazi anti-Semitic actions took the form of boycotts against Jewish stores. No good German, the nation was told, would buy from a Jewish store. The brutal SA stood outside the doors of all Jewish shops to help compassionate Germans remember….
In schools, children were taught racial theory, and shown pictures of what a “dirty Jew” looked like.
This was a chart posted in elementary classrooms entitled "German Youth, Jewish Youth“; its purpose was to help Aryan children distinguish friend from foe.
Slowly and surely, the image of the “Eternal Jew” was being hammered into the consciousness of Germans.
The following are cover cartoons from Julius Streicher’s Der Sturmer. This anti-Semitic paper was published from 1923 to 1945. During the Third Reich, Stürmer display cases were found all over Germany, and it reached a peak circulation in 1938 of almost 500, 000 weekly readers.
This cartoon was published five months after Hitler took power. The title is "Revenge. " The Nazi who shoves the Jew over the cliff says: "Go where you wanted me to go, you evil spirit. "
They belong to the church, she belongs to Satan. Both are lost to the German race. "
Why? Why, for what purpose is the blood flowing? Behind the scenes, the Jew grins. That makes the answer clear: They bleed for the Jews.
Starting in 1933, rallies began in Berlin where men, women, and children showed their support for Hitler’s idea of the "Folk Community. " (volksgemeinschaft).
Starting in 1935, Hitler’s government began depriving Jews of civil rights. This was the first step in a series of deadly laws that would lead directly to the Holocaust…. .
The 1935 Nuremberg Laws deprived Jews of citizenship and prohibited sexual relations and intermarriage between Jews and "persons of German or related blood. "
An inter-married couple is publicly humiliated. The non-Jewish woman carries a sign reading "I am the greatest swine and sleep only with Jews. " The man's sign reads, "As a Jew, I only take German girls up to my room. "
• Also in 1935, Jews were forced to purchase and wear a six-pointed star of David whenever they appeared in public. The yellow or blue star was worn on an armband or pinned on a shirt or coat. The stars, triangles, and markings in this poster are symbols used by the Nazis to isolate and identify their victims. Many badges also identified the bearer's race or nationality. - Yellow triangles were for Jews: - Red triangles for political prisoners - Purple for Jehovah's Witnesses - Pink for homosexuals - Green for criminals - Black for Gypsies and "asocials, " - Blue for emigrants. Letters printed on badges usually indicated nationality.

We were the first really to solve the problem of blood by action, and in this connection, by problem of blood, we of course do not mean antisemitism. Antisemitism is exactly the same as delousing. Getting rid of lice is not a question of ideology. It is a matter of cleanliness.
Phase Two: 1938 -1942
November 9 -10, 1938 -Kristallnacht, "The Night of Broken Glass” • Rioters burned over 1, 000 synagogues • Germans vandalized and looted 7, 000 Jewish businesses and homes • Dozens of Jews were killed in an assault instigated by Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. • Synagogues burned throughout the Reich……
In Baden….
In Frankfurt ….
In Aachen….
And in Berlin….
Following Kristallnacht, those Jews with the financial ability to leave Germany did so…. the writing was now on the wall.
Following the annexation of Austria in 1938, the Nazis extended the Nuremburg Laws to their new territory (Austria). Here, Jews were forced to scrub the streets for the advancing German army.
Those that did not scrub fast enough were beaten….
In 1939, World War II began, and with the invasion of Poland came the opportunity for the next phase of the persecution of the Jews: Mass Extermination.
Speech by Hans Frank [Governor of occupied Poland], December 16 1941. • . . . The Jews represent for us also extraordinary malignant gluttons. We have now approximately 2, 500, 000 of them in the General Government [Nazi occupied Poland], perhaps with the Jewish mixtures and everything that goes with it, 3, 500, 000 Jews. We cannot shoot or poison those 3, 500, 000 Jews, but we shall nevertheless be able to take measures which will lead somehow to their annihilation, and this in connection with the gigantic measures to be determined in discussions with the Reich.
Behind the German Army came Einsatzgruppen, soldiers whose job was to execute civilians and Jews in Nazi-occupied territory.
• ALL who were considered “enemies of the Reich” were executed. Men…. .
Women….
And children….
In the following slides, you will see a group of Jewish women from a Russian town from the time that they are rounded up to their execution… As you look at these photos, keep in mind that many of these women were no older than 14 or 15 years old…. .
In 1942, at the Wannsee Conference, SS Deputy Fuhrer Reinhard Heydrich began the “Final Solution” of the Jewish Question. This decision would lead directly to the gates of Auschwitz….
