“Holocaust” • Comes from the German word “holokauston” which means a burnt offering to God. • Refers to the genocide of European Jews and others by the Nazis during World War II lasting from 1933 -1945. • Is defined as a thorough destruction involving extensive loss of life especially through fire Return to Review

Adolph Hitler • Hitler believed in a perfect Aryan or Nordic race, which lead to the execution of anyone who did not fulfill those requirements. • By the time World War II began in 1939, execution or concentration camps were already in effect. • Adolph Hitler killed himself on April 30 th, 1945. The Holocaust Did You Know? • By 1945, 2 out of every 3 Jews were killed. • Jews weren’t the only targets of the Nazi party. Others were: – Gypsies – The handicapped – Polish • These others, including Jews, were thought to be biologically threatening to the German “Aryan” race. • Nazi is a shortened term for the National Socialist German Workers Party. • The Nazi party was primarily anti-Communist, anti-Semitic, racist, nationalistic, imperialistic and militaristic individuals. • Nazi’s believed that the Germans were “racially superior” and others were inferior.
