History of compound miter saw • 1977 in England Samuel Miller invented circular saw for cutting massive logs when spun. • As time pass the common two-man-pit saw that became a tremendous change when Tabitha Babbitt came up the first circular saw that would help out the lumber industry. • Years after, primitive tools from the pass assumed new shape.

Safety Rules • • • • 1. ) Eye and ear protection when operating a miter saw. • 15. ) When using a sliding miter saw, start cutting with the blade closest to you, plunge downward, and push blade forward on its sliders as you cut. 2. ) Don't wear gloves, loose clothing, jewelry, or any dangling objects when operating a miter saw. 3. ) All guards must be in place and operating. If guard seems slow to return to its normal position, adjust it or repair it immediately. 4. ) Unplug or lock out power to the miter saw when making repairs or adjusting blades and guards. 5. ) Hands and fingers must be kept clear of the blade by at least 6 inches. 6. ) Clean lower guard frequently to help with visibility and movement. 7. ) Use only recommended blade size. 8. ) Regularly check and tighten the blade and the blade-attachment mechanism. 9. ) Ensure that the blade and its related washers and fasteners are correctly positioned and secured on the saw's arbor. 10. ) To avoid losing control or placing hands in the blade path, hold or clamp all material securely against the fence when cutting. 11. ) Do not perform operations freehand. 12. ) Never cut small pieces. 13. ) Long material should be supported at the same height as saw table. 14. ) After completing a cut, release trigger switch and allow blade to come to a complete stop, then raise the blade from workpiece. If moving blade stays in the cutting area after cutting is complete, injury can result from accidental contact.

Safety Violation A junior high school student started up a compound miter saw to cut an angled corner for a wooden jewelry box. He pulled the saw down with one hand, the blade grabbed down on the wood he was cutting and pulled his other hand in, severing his thumb. Shop teacher explained on the saw's operation to the class, but did not posted on operator's manual or instruction sheet near the machine. During an interview the student wasn't aware of clamping the workpiece to the fence was safer than holding it.

Background Info • Compound Miter Saws have blades that pivot from left to right for angular cuts. • Tilt in singular direction for beveled cuts, manipulating the saw on both of its axes at once creates a compound miter cut. • They are useful for picture frames, crown molding or any projects that require angled cuts in two planes.

Other Types • Dual Compound Miter Saws function like compound saws, but compound miter saws tilt in only one direction as dual can tilt both left and right. • Sliding Compound Miter Saws has all of the versatility of compound miter saws and a sliding feature, it is similar to radial arm saw, available for you to move forward and backward on the blade.
