THE HISTORY OF MEASUREMENT By: Raymar Jara

How it all started!!!! Measurements are used in everything. Your house wasn’t made out of thin air it was made by angles which have measurements. These are the key things that we need to build our country. Even soda and food are measured.

The first civilization It was the Greeks who developed the "foot" as their fundamental unit of length. Legend has it that this Greek unit was based on an actual measurement of Hercules' foot. There were also the Egyptians and the Romans.

For example on the roof the angle is 18°

Around the time of the Roman Empire the terms inch, foot, and yard were refined. What was the length of a foot based on? All the word were different in language but they meant the same thing to us Americans. As for yard it was measured from the male’s foot all the way to his chin which was a yard.

For what reason did the French Academy of Science create the metric system? In 1790, in the midst of the French Revolution, the National Assembly of France requested the French Academy of Sciences to "deduce an invariable standard for all the measures and all the weights. The French created the metric system so that all countries could have the same system and so no one would not be confused.

What was the Treaty of the Meter (May 20, 1875)? It was a agreement that created to preserve the metric system. One organization was the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM); the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM); International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM).

How was the length of a standard meter defined in the year 1791? The meter would be a unit of length such that Earth's meridian line (a line linking the equator with the north pole) was equal to ten million meters. Over the following years measurements of the meridian line that passes through Paris were attempted, so that a standard meter could be cast in metal. In the 18 th century it was felt that a standard unit of length was needed. The French Academy of Sciences decided in 1791 that the meter would be defined by the dimensions of the planet earth.

How was the length of a standard meter redefined in the year 1938 In the 18 th century it was felt that a standard unit of length was needed. The French Academy of Sciences decided in 1791 that the meter would be defined by the dimensions of the planet earth

Significance of the Metric Act The Metric Act in 1866 was significant because recognized the metric system as a legal system of measurement in the United States. Basically, it said that the United States found the metric system reliable enough to be used in the U. S.

What were some of the early tools to help aid in measurement Of the tools found by archaeologists, the oldest tool used for measurement was the compass. It was used to ensure two stones, when cut would fit together accurately. This aided in the pyramids construction. Your foot, stones, sticks.

What major engineering blunders were results of faulty measurement The Hubble Space Telescope was one of the many engineering blunders that had a tiny measurement mistake. The mirror that was in the telescope was a fraction off so the pictures did not come out that clear.
