History of Handshake Practiced In Ancient Greece As far back as the 5 th century Is thought to a gesture of peace. 2 soldiers handshaking means no weapons.
What TO do Step 1: Know when to handshake. Step 2: Extend your hand. Step 3: Extend right hand straight before. Step 4: Take others persons hand firmly. Step 5: Keep hand perpendicular to ground. Step 6: Shake firm once or twice. Step 7: Make eye contact.
What NOT to do Never know when to handshake. Keep your hand close to you. Extend hand crooked. Shake loosely Not making eye contact
Other Cultures Australia-Men shake hands before women. Morocco- Shake if only same gender. Russia- If business, men kiss women hands. Mexico- Long lasting, could mean long hug. France- Shake quickly and lightly. Turkey- Firm handshakes are rude, hold long time. South Korea- Oldest person starts, use soft grip.
People with Disabilities Visually impaired… Missing or non-functioning right hand. . . If someone isn’t able to shake at all…
When to Shake Hands Respond when one is reaching out. Respond with hand shaking. When you are greeting, handshake.
What do you do if… Someone offers you their left hand…You put out your right hand. They have sweaty palms…Shake there hand anyways. Someone doesn’t shake when you offer… say ok and be respectful. Your hands are full… Put those things down and then shake there hand.

Technique Keep fingers together, thump up and open. Slide hand between other persons hand. Squeeze firmly Lasts three seconds Good eye contact
Handshake Styles (4) 1. Fist pump 2. Wide five 3. Lingering Handshake 4. The Push Off
Style 1: Fist Pump A young , youth handshake. Healthier than traditional handshakes. One persons fist and another’s meet. There is a fear of germs though.
Style 2: Wide Five Slightly older but still a younger thing. Hands wave to side to an arch. When hands meet, more traditional than slap. Does not spread germs as much.
Style 3: Lingering Handshake A normal handshake Has a little more shakes It is longer
Style 4: The push off At the end of the shake, your hand is pushed away. It is subtle but it could be read as a negative message.
