The Green Customs Initiative What is Green Customs? An unprecedented partnership of international organisations Its objective is to enhance the capacity of customs and enforcment officers to: – Detect and prevent illegal trade – Facilitate the legal trade in environmentally-sensitive commodities covered by the relevant conventions and MEAs.
The Green Customs Initiative Genesis of GCI Origins: • Capacity building - customs training under Ozone CAP to implement the Montreal Protocol) and • CITES Capacity building Illegal and legal trade should be considered in a more holistic way by making links, where appropriate, with other environmental conventions to provide integrated training. Synergies and recognition of common ground between various treaties with trade-related elements was developed

The Green Customs Initiative Key Messages Customs officers - front line of every country's defence against illegal trade, and the first link in the enforcement chain; Adequate capacity of Customs to prevent illegal trade is needed for effective implementation of MEAs; It is important for GCI partners and Customs authorities to work closely together to safeguard environmental security.
