GREEK CITY STATE A City that has all the markings of a Civilization/Nation Government Economics Writing system Specialized Occupations Urban Setting The American Nation A multi city and state community that forms a nation One city Washington controls the federal or national government One city Albany controls the state government Individual cities for have all of the makings of a civilization as well

THE POLIS 750 BCE the Greeks come out the Dark Ages They develop a system of City States It represents the town and the surrounding farm country The Polis is the Center of the Greek City State Politically and Commercially

THE POLIS The Acropolis becomes the main gathering place of the people It serves as a place of refuge, a religious center, and an area for a public market place Surrounded by walls and defensive features These varied in size from a few miles to several hundred square miles

Constitution forms the 13 United States with multiple cities, towns and villages united together Washington DC was constructed in 1790 CE to unite the 13 sates into one nation Washington becomes the center of political activity in the United States No walls surround American cities Malls, parks, schools become the gathering places for American People THE ALL AMERICAN CITY

THE POLIS Adult Male Citizens With Political Rights (Nobles, Farmers Merchants) Women and Children Citizens Without Political Rights Non-citizens and slaves they had no political rights

THE AMERICAN CITY American cities are communities of people that shared a common goal and identity Created great works of Art and Architecture Support their schools, sports teams and musical groups Society Broken into three Groups:

SOCIAL STRUCTURE Adult citizens are equal to each other both men and women Children are protected by the law as well as their families Visitors from other cultures are equal in the eyes of the American law system and have the same rights as American citizens

THE POLIS Citizens had rights, but these rights also responsibilities “Every citizen belongs to the State”- Aristotle Citizens needed to participate in government in order for these small communities to survive These were very patriotic people However, this lead to distrusting strangers and those of other City States often leading to WAR

AMERICAN CITIES Citizens have rights that come with few responsibilities “Every citizen has the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness”Thomas Jefferson Citizens needed to participate in government in order for representation to be equal People are very patriotic However, often most people do not vote or understand the voting process
