Symbol A symbol is a character, place, object, figure, or colour which represents an abstract idea or concept. Its meaning extends beyond itself! Symbolism is representing concepts using symbols. The meaning of a symbol can be deduced by observing the context or setting it is used, or how characters behave in response to the symbol.

Symbols in The Great Gatsby The Green Light -Symbolizes Gatsby’s hopes, dreams and desires. -It is situated at the end of Daisy’s dock, and thus represents his longing for a life together with her. -More generally, it represents the American dream.
Symbols in The Great Gatsby Eyes of T. J. Eckleburg -Gigantic eyes on a billboard overlooking the valley of ashes. -Overlooks the grey decaying land below, and the corruption that occurs there. -Symbolizes God’s judgement on a corrupt American society.
Symbols in The Great Gatsby The Valley of Ashes -Land filled with ash and industrial waste between West Egg and New York City. -Symbolizes moral and social decay of the American society, in consequence of the indulgent lives of the rich.
Symbols in The Great Gatsby White -Characters of high social status wear white clothing (Gatsby’s suit, Daisy). -Mansions in East Egg are described as white palaces. -Symbolizes a deceiving outer facade which appears to be pure, hiding the corruption within.
Beacon Towers was built in 1917 on the north shore of Long Island was an inspiration for Gatsby’s mansion.
