The Great Gatsby Chapter Three
Yesterday we looked at a possible structure for 1(a) questions on “The Great Gatsby” Today we’re going to apply this structure to Chapter 3: How does Fitzgerald tell the story in Chapter 3 of “The Great Gatsby”?
A reminder of the suggested approach: Introduce your essay looking at the chapter’s function in the plot (what important things happen? ) Always write about voice (ticking the “form” box) and aim to address 2 other aspects of narrative (settings; time and sequence; characterisation; point of view. . ) Aim to discuss at least 3 different uses of language Conclude by linking the chapter into key themes in the novel, and glancing ahead to what comes next.
Introduction: 10 minutes: Skim through the chapter to remind yourself of its key events. Check you know how chapter 2 ends and how chapter 4 starts. In pairs, make bullets point for an introductory paragraph Feedback to class
2 nd paragraph: 10 minutes: What is there to be said about “voice” in this chapter? Is the first person narrator significant? How is the reader invited to view the events / characters of this chapter through the narrator’s voice? Write the first sentence of your second paragraph and bullet point the rest. Feedback to class.
3 rd paragraph: 10 minutes: Choose another “aspect of narrative” that you feel is relevant to this chapter. Choose one or two details of language that will help you to examine it Write the first sentence of your third paragraph and bullet point the rest. Feedback to class
4 th paragraph: 10 minutes: Choose another “aspect of narrative” that you feel is relevant to this chapter. Choose one or two details of language that will help you to examine it Write the first sentence of your fourth paragraph and bullet point the rest. Feedback to class
Conclusion: 10 minutes: Identify any major themes of the novel which are addressed in this chapter Identify any major plot function which this chapter plays within the novel Identify how this chapter leads into the next one Write the first sentence of your conclusion, and bullet point the rest (NB don’t attempt detailed language analysis in a conclusion – don’t repeat points you have already made – do make clear points about the importance of the chapter in the novel)
