The Great Calculus Debate Newton vs Leibniz Objectives
The Great Calculus Debate Newton – vs- Leibniz
Objectives • Students will be able to confidently discuss the argument regarding the Newton/Leibniz controversy of the founder of Calculus • Students will understand the timeline under which these two mathematicians began creating Calculus • Students will learn the differences in the notation styles of Newton and Leibniz • Students will develop a digital story supporting historical facts in the controversy
Teacher Preparation • Read the attached document to familiarize yourself with the history of the controversy • Examine the notation styles of Newton and Leibniz • Familiarize yourself with www. extranormal. com or similar digital storytelling software • Be prepared to facilitate a student discussion about Newton and Leibniz
Student Activities • Student groups will research Newton, Leibniz, and the Calculus controversy • Student groups will create a digital story to present their research and give their perspective on the debate • Students will work problems using both notation styles
Extensions • Cross-curricular project with Civics with a mock trial to determine the priority of the Calculus • Create a timeline showing the work of Newton, Leibniz, and significant historical and mathematical events of their time
