The Great British Columbia Shake. Out (Shake. Out BC)
Thursday, October 20, 2011 10: 20 am
• A province-wide drill • First was in January 2011, with more than 470, 000 participants! • Now an annual event on the third Thursday of October • Locally organized • The goal is to get everyone in the province to participate & practice
Why have a drill? Because this is Earthquake Country! An earthquake can happen at any time!
Practice makes Perfect • Practice what to do if you experience an earthquake • So when an earthquake hits, you – know what to do – and do it
We’re All in This Together! What we do now determines what life will be like after

EARTHQUAKE
What to do…. . • If inside, stay inside! • If outside, stay outside!
What to do…. . DROP – when a big earthquake hits, you will be knocked off your feet COVER – get under a sturdy piece of furniture (a table) and cover your head and neck – you will need them after the shaking stops HOLD ON – hold on to the table and stay with it during the shaking
…. . and Why Christchurch, NZ September 2010 M 7. 0 Mexicali, Northern Mexico April 2010 M 7. 2
…. . and Why • Building collapse is rare in British Columbia • Most people are injured in earthquakes by things falling on them • Get under something to be safe! • DO NOT get in a doorway! – It does not protect you from falling items, and in strong shaking you can not stand
