Introduction, Scope and Goal § § § That scope and goal for the initial Grand Calorimeter and Trigger Upgrade Schedule Unification workshop was to initiate the discussion such that a synchronized and agreed installation schedule for the three linked subsystems can be finalized during the November Upgrade Week and presented to CMS for approval during the December CMS week. We are here to receive status and to follow up on items identified during the previous workshop Calorimeter trigger upgrade progress and plan presentation this afternoon § we should use this opportunity to discuss details Upgrade week FNAL 20111109 M. Assumptions - Deductions l l Due to the large span of possible LHC machine

Assumptions - Deductions l l Due to the large span of possible LHC machine parameters it cannot be assumed that the current RCT – GCT will be able to cope until LS 2 s Foresee operation of an upgraded system before LS 2 The commissioning of upgrades must be planned to keep the risk for CMS availability as low as reasonably achievable at all times s Foresee to commission and operate the complete new trigger in parallel with the current system Upgrade week FNAL 20111109 M. LS 2 s Currently scheduled to start December 2018 and last 12 months. Intermediate extended winter technical stop s Currently not (? ) scheduled but likely to start two years into the run period between LS 1 and LS 2, thus starting December 2016 and lasting up to 6 months. Preparation for Upgrade The preparation for the upgrade consists of installing the means required

Preparation for Upgrade The preparation for the upgrade consists of installing the means required to install, test, and commission the complete upgraded system independently of the CMS operation. l l l HCAL plan to install optical splitters on the optical fibers from the detector to the HTR cards in order to allow parallel installation, commissioning, and operation of the upgraded off detector electronics system. s The latest date for the re-commissioning of the links to the legacy HTR cards is the end of LS 1, 6 months before physics thus leaving time for global commissioning. ECAL plan to install and commission o. SLBs on all TCC cards before the end of LS 1, 6 months before physics. RCT plan to install and commission o. RMs on all ECAL locations on RCT receiver cards before the end of LS 1, 6 months before physics. Upgrade week FNAL 20111109 M. Hansen, CERN. magnus. hansen@cern. ch

Upgrade of Calorimeter Trigger and HCAL Back End l l l The HF back

Upgrade of Calorimeter Trigger and HCAL Back End l l l The HF back end will be upgraded first and the plan is to use the upgraded system as the primary for physics after LS 1 s Subject to a readiness review and CMS management approval end 2012. s Implies that some additional o. RMs are produced and possibly that the initial o. RMs are installed in HF positions. The upgraded calorimeter trigger is planned to be installed and commissioned at the latest when the intermediate extended technical stop starts. The HCAL Back End installation will be kept in pace with the calorimeter trigger upgrade as it is required for the tests of the trigger path. Upgrade week FNAL 20111109 M. Hansen, CERN. magnus. hansen@cern. ch

Upgrade of the HCAL barrel and end cap front end electronics This is high

Upgrade of the HCAL barrel and end cap front end electronics This is high risk for CMS operation since there is likely no going back. l The R/D necessary will proceed with a pace compatible with complete deployment during the intermediate extended technical stop. s It is however understood that the actual installation may take place later but during LS 2 at the latest. l Upgrade of the HO s The upgrade of the HO electronics is imminent and was not discussed in much detail. Follow-up l l l HCAL will target to have cost estimates and a rack

Follow-up l l l HCAL will target to have cost estimates and a rack plan by the FNAL November upgrade workshop. The target end of production date for all o. SLB + o. RMs needs to be clarified and the plan should be ready for the November FNAL upgrade workshop. The details of the o. SLB configuration options need to be clarified and should be ready for the November FNAL upgrade workshop. Upgrade week FNAL 20111109 M. Hansen, CERN. magnus. hansen@cern. ch
