WHAT IS OBSERVATION? • It is gathering data (evidence) • It is using senses • It is more than seeing – it is perceptual • It is mental (thought processes) • It may be spontaneous or unexpected • It may be induced or sought
OBSERVATION BEST PRACTICES • To be systematic and planned in situation and techniques • To be specific • To be objective – in that quantitative becomes qualitative as qualitative is subjective while quantitative may be replicated for agreement • To observe with an open & inquisitive mind
