MINING CAMPS • There were a ton of tents for each gold mining camp. These tents would become wooden houses and stores. • Mining life was very dangerous and unlucky. MINER IMMIGRATION AND CONFLICT • • 2/3 of miners were from America originally. Other miners came from South America, Australia, and China. Many miners cheat others due to anger and greed. American miners forced Chinese and Mexican miners out of the gold fields to reduce competition. • Foreign Miners Tax- This forced the foreign miners to pay a $20 tax a month. • Discussion: How would the immigrants react to this tax?
THE EFFECT OF THE GOLD RUSH • The gold rush ended in 1852 with over 250, 000 people moving into California. • San Francisco became the state’s center for manufacturing, trade, and shipping. • The Californios were taken advantage of as Americans took their property and legal rights. • Thousands of Native Americans died of disease or were killed by miners. • California was admitted to the Union as a free state in 1850. • Discussion: Would you have moved to California as soon as it became a state?
