URANUS • Father: No father • Mother: Gaea • Children: Titans, Cyclopes Ø Personification of heaven and the sky. Ø Decided to banish the Cyclopes into Tartarus. Gaea was extremely upset and had their son Cronus stand up to him. Ø Using a sickle, Cronus mutilated Uranus, creating the Furies, Giants, and Aphrodite.

GAEA (GAIA) • Father: Chaos • Children: Uranus, Titans, Cyclopes Ø Gaea was best known as "mother earth. " Ø Later mated with her first born child Uranus, and produced her other horrific offspring (e. g. Cyclopes). Ø She was depicted as a very large woman.

CRONUS (SATURN) • • Father: Uranus Mother: Gaea Wife: Rhea Children: Demeter, Hestia, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, Zeus Ø The ruler of the Titans; overthrew his own father. Ø Swallowed his children for fear of being dethroned. Ø Rhea hid Zeus away; later he dethroned Cronus.

RHEA • • Father: Uranus Mother: Gaea Husband: Cronus Children: Demeter, Hades, Hera, Hestia, Poseidon, Zeus Ø Mother of the gods of Olympus Ø Gave her children to Cronus as soon as they were born; Cronus swallowed them Ø She hid Zeus away from Cronus

OCEANUS • Father: Uranus • Mother: Gaea • Wife: Tethys • Children: Oceanid Nymphs, 3000 rivers, Seas Ø A serpent-like being that encircles the Earth. Ø Replaced by the god Poseidon came to power as the god of the oceans, rivers, and water. Ø He was the only titan that was not against Zeus in the war.

TETHYS (SALACIA) • • Father: Uranus Mother: Gaea Husband: Oceanus Children: Oceanids, Styx

HYPERION • Father: Uranus • Mother: Gaea • Wife: Thea • Children: Helios, Selene Ø Hyperion is sometimes classified as a god of the sun. However, other stories actually use his name to represent the Sun itself.

ATLAS • Father: Iapetus • Mother: Clymene Ø A leader in the battle between the Titans and the Olympians. Ø The Titans were defeated in this war and were placed in Tartarus as punishment. Ø Atlas was not granted this punishment and was instead forced to carry the entire weight of the sky and the Earth on his shoulders. Ø Relieved of his duty once by Hercules, but was later tricked into resuming his burden.

PROMETHEUS • Father: Iapetus • Mother: Clymene Ø Name meaning “fore-thought” Ø Teacher of astronomy, medicine, navigation, metalwork, architecture, and writing Ø Took part in the creation of mankind Ø Stole fire from Mount Olympus and gave it to mankind Ø Chained to a rock on Caucasus Mountains, everyday a vulture would come and devour his liver, which grew back every night

EPIMETHEUS • Father: Iapetus • Mother: Clymene • Wife: Pandora Ø Name meaning “after-thought” Ø Created animals, gave most of the good qualities (strength, thick furs, etc) to animals, nothing left for humans Ø Took Pandora as his wife, they opened the box of evils together
