Associate Degrees for Transfer • Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act (SB 1440, Padilla) created Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs) • These degrees are the first half of a 120 unit baccalaureate degree program with the California State University • Students completing an ADT are guaranteed: • Admission to a CSU campus with junior standing in a similar major to their ADT • Will not be required to take more than 60 units after transfer ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

Intent of Transfer Degrees • Streamline the transfer of students from community colleges to CSU. • Aligned to an intersegmetally developed degree template, transfer model curriculum (TMC). • Approved TMCs are posted to c-id. net • Chancellor’s Office produces templates for degree submission that can be found at cccco. edu ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

ADT Obligation • The requirement to create an Associate Degree for Transfer if your college has an existing Associate Degree in the same TOP code began on August 30. • Contact the CO if you haven’t been able to create an ADT. • Colleges are not being asked to deactivate existing degrees if they are unable to comply with SB 440. • Chemistry and Biology ADTs will be due in September 2016 • New TMCs require degrees to be developed 18 months after posting ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

UC Transfer Pathways • The University of California (UC) has developed a common set of transfer preparation (called a UC Transfer Pathway) for students planning to transfer to a UC campus. • Completion of these transfer pathways do not guarantee students admission into the UC system! Model Curriculum • Model curriculum (MC) is a curricular structure collaboratively developed by discipline faculty for a certificate or a degree that specifies the required and optional courses that comprise a locally offered award that is recognized statewide as MC-aligned. • Two types: • CCCMC Intrasegmental • ISMC Intersegmental ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

But Why Have Model Curriculum? • Possibilities include: • Transfer benefits to students when universities recognize an MC and offer students locally-defined benefits • Establish appropriate program consistency in awards across the colleges • Facilitate student goal completion by simplifying student movement between colleges • Honor completed coursework through reciprocity • No 60 unit restriction ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

Reciprocity for Model Curriculum • Course reciprocity as established for TMCs. • Consistency in MC-aligned degrees across colleges – • MCs for degrees must identify the GE options permissible – • Local • Transfer for STEM • No local graduation requirements. Disadvantages of Model Curricula • No guarantee for entry to a CSU campus with junior standing. • CSU can require the student to complete more than 60 units after transfer. • CSU may require students to retake courses already completed at a community college. Possibilities for Model Curricula • Recent discussions with representatives from the CSU have opened the possibility of granting degrees aligned to some model curricula the same guarantees as ADTs • Only some ISMCs would grant these guarantees. Impacted programs (like nursing) would be excluded. • These are very early discussions, but ISMCs could be created to meet the needs of both the UC and CSU ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

Next Steps for Model Curriculum • Work with universities to determine if degrees Intersegmental Model Curriculum can help transfer students. • Develop process for recognizing and signaling model curriculum alignment. • Establish means of ensuring colleges align with model curriculum in the same way they develop degrees that align with TMCs. • Determine whether model curriculum aligned degrees will be offered guarantees similar to ADTs. A New Kind of TMC – Area of Emphasis (Ao. E) • Mandated by SB 440 • For majors without a high transfer volume warranting single-discipline TMC • Interdisciplinary • Single AOE TMC feeds multiple majors at CSU • May be used to develop more than one ADT CCC • AOE TMCs are general, but local degrees may be specific • Unique TOP code, no requirement! At Your Campus • How can you help your faculty develop these new degrees? • Educate your faculty regarding AOEs. • Designed to serve a wide range of majors • Colleges can create multiple degrees to serve various student populations. • Local degrees can be very specific for a single major or broad to cover multiple majors. New Ao. Es Under Development • SB 440 requires the development of two additional Ao. E TMCs by September 1, 2016. This deadline will not be met! • Law and Public Policy has already gone through the DIG process and vetting is planned for the fall. • STEM and Social Work are two additional TMC possibilities that are currently being explored.
