The Fundamental Five The Formula for Quality Instruction

Remind me again…

The Fundamental Five Small Group Frame Purposeful Talk lesson the Teach in the Critical Writing Power Zone Praise and Encouragement

Frame the Lesson

Objective • is"a collection of words and/or pictures and diagrams intended to let others know what you intend for your students to achieve. ”

Tips for daily objective Place in the classroom where students can see the written objective and product Discuss the objective at the beginning of the lesson Make sure it is reasonable to complete the objective in one daily lesson or class The objective needs to be “kid friendly” language The objective must be specific enough to clarify the goal

A product is: Completed by every student Done the last 5 minutes of class or the end of the lesson A final check for understanding Looked at daily by the teacher to guide future instruction Likely to increase the opportunity for a student to retain important learning Proof for the teacher that learning has occurred

A product is NOT Test or quiz Designed to be a grade daily Usually done in a group Usually verbal except as appropriate in the lower grades

Work in the Power Zone

What is the Power Zone • “There is a distinct correlation between the teacher's body position in the classroom and student success. ” • Pozzer-Ardenghi, L. , & Roth, W. -M. (manuscript submitted for publication). Action and Interaction in the Classroom: Teacher's Movement and Associated Pedagogical and Discursive Practices.

Why teach in the Power Zone? Monitor Understanding Address problem behavior immediat ely Maximize Communicate with all students student learning Answer questions Manage transitions Personal connection with Show student Promote genuine Equitable interest in learning for students all students

Recognize and Reinforce

What is recognize and reinforce? “Compliments and encouragement go a long way towards making children feel good. Descriptive praise, where you tell the child exactly what it is that you like, works best of all. On top of that, praising children when they’re behaving well is likely to make them want to keep behaving well. ” Raising Children Network (Australia) Limited

recognize and reinforce • Select and define a behavior to increase. • Choose reinforcers. • Deliver positive reinforcement. • Monitor student performance • Quick assessment of student learning

Frequent, Small-Group, Purposeful Talk about the Learning

Small group purposeful talk • In the area of intellectual development, young adolescents prefer active over passive learning activities. They prefer interaction with peers during learning activities.

What is small group purposeful talk? • • Frequent (daily) Small Group (1 -3 people) Content Discussion based on objective Planned Discussion

Write Critically

What is Critical Writing? • Defined as “writing for the purpose of organizing, clarifying, defending, refuting, analyzing, dissecting, connecting, and/or expanding on ideas or concepts”

Research says critical writing… • • • Is essential for academic improvement. Reinforces learning. Increases amount of material recalled. Increases speed of recall. Improves literacy. Achieves rigor.

What is RIGOR? • Rigor is pushing yourself beyond what is easy. • Education should push students to move beyond who and where they were when they entered the classroom. Students need to know that explicitly. • They need to know our job is to push them, and their job is to be pushed.

Assessment Whatever you do, assess it! Doesn’t have to be a grade. Students need to know that we’re checking for understanding, or… They won’t do it.

The Fundamental Five • Let’s Practice… • What has been/can be done in your classroom to show “The Five”? • (This means raise your hand share. )

Frame the Lesson in practice • Talk to students about what they think the objective actually means to them. • Use “I will…” statements with the kids – When in groups, explain the steps/procedures • (also gets Write Critrically)

Power Zone in practice • Stand behind the students • Sit in random empty desks

Recognize & Reinforce in practice • Use a Wall of Fame – Using Power. Point (or program of your choice) print certificates for class milestones. • A/B honor roll, etc. • Use the i. Pads to film activites/projects – Have students give positive feedback • Use “Punch Cards” – Punch a hole in the card for desired behaviors/successes – Give incentives for a fully punched card. • Get to know the students well. – Know who thrives on public attention and who needs private praise.

Small Group Talk in practice • Small Group Games/Competition – Must work together to determine answers. • Any questions to the teacher results in penalties • Rally Coach – one partner helps the other – Encourage and check work done (peer review and editing)

Write Critically in practice • Make more activities competitive – The students still must discuss and determine why the correct student is correct. • Taking notes – with categories – Give 2 -3 subtitles/categories the students must put the notes into as they write down the notes in class.
