v. To build anything that you would want to last and function properly, you would start with a basic, solid foundation. The nursing profession is no exception to that concept. v. There are four concepts, or building blocks of the foundation, to the professional practice of nursing that are crucial to comprehend. v. Those four basic concepts are person, environment, health and nurse. They are interrelated with one another. All tasks related to the professional practice of nursing are done in reaction to these interrelated concepts. v. Within the four basic concepts are subconcepts. They breakdown the relationship that they have to the main concepts. Introduction

Person v Refers to the individual as a unique, autonomous and adaptable human being,

Person v Refers to the individual as a unique, autonomous and adaptable human being, not just as a patient v Includes family and social groups that define who the person is v Is motivated by needs and seeks homeostasis

Environment v Includes numerous variables that can impact the persons well-being and/or recovery v

Environment v Includes numerous variables that can impact the persons well-being and/or recovery v Can be physical (air, food, water, etc. ) and nonphysical (family, culture, social structures, religious beliefs, attitudes towards death and suffering)

Health v The term “health” can be very broad in nature and does not

Nurse (Nursing) v Has no one concrete or absolute definition v Can be referred
