Mission Statement The mission of the Jackson Safety Traffic Program is to reduce the costs of traffic crashes through innovative funding of traffic safety projects. The cost of traffic crashes in Jackson County in terms of financial cost, emotional suffering, personal injury and loss of life is immeasurable. Only through provision of resources for innovative funding for successful traffic safety projects in a coordinated manner will reductions in the costs of traffic crashes occur.

Goals • Coordination of diverse traffic safety programs to reduce the number and severity of traffic crashes in Jackson County. • Provision of funding opportunities from a variety of sources for engineering, education and enforcement of traffic safety programs. • Increase public awareness and voluntary compliance with traffic laws. • Improve efficiency and avoid duplication of traffic safety programs by the Jackson County Traffic Safety Program and organizations.

A Program Making An Impact 1 When Jackson County was named by the State of Michigan as the site to launch a pilot traffic safety program in 1987, few imagined the program would impact our community the way it has. The Jackson Traffic Safety Program has proven to be a big success – initially channeling nearly $2. 5 million in federal funds into Jackson County and introducing dozens of programs designated to make the roadways of Jackson Safe for motorists and pedestrians.

A Program Making An Impact 2 As a pilot comprehensive traffic safety project, the designers of the program hoped that a local source of funding could be secured so that the Jackson Traffic Safety Program would be self-sufficient and ongoing. This was accomplished through a lot of hard work, cooperation, and assistance of many individuals in the Jackson County Community interested in traffic safety.

Historical Background • Jackson County awarded the first Michigan Comprehensive Community Traffic Safety Program.

Historical Background • Jackson County awarded the first Michigan Comprehensive Community Traffic Safety Program. • Jackson Traffic Safety Program charter was signed. • Jackson County agreed to house the program. – Jackson County agreed to accept the JTSP staff as non-union members of the County. – Agreement by Jackson County to fund 50% of the JTSP Administration through a $5. 00 increase in court costs. – $5. 00 increase court costs implementation all paid civil traffic infractions • Administrative function and activities of the JTSP were incorporated with the Region 2 Planning Commission.
