The Foundation Stage at The Colleton
Welcome to Foundation! We help families and children settle into Foundation by: • Offering home visits; • Visiting pre-schools and nurseries; • Pre-visits to school • Staggered starts including shorter days and staying for lunch.
A typical day in our Foundation Team • Welcome and register • Phonics • Child initiated indoor and outdoor play/ Adult focus activities/tasks • Snack time Show & Tell/Snack count • Adult focus activities/tasks. Child initiated indoor and outdoor • Singing • Lunch • Register • • Maths input Adult focus activities/tasks. Child initiated indoor and outdoor • Group activities • Tidy away time/Story time
Group activities We do some activities in a group: • P. E. and Dance • E-classroom • Library • Write Dance • Music • Numbertime • Circle Time
Our curriculum • We believe that all children should have the best possible start to their education. Our Foundation curriculum aims to support children to learn through a variety of real, hands on experiences that engage, stimulate and inspire children to want to know more and to develop an ‘I can’ attitude towards learning. We strive to provide a rich and stimulating environment in which every child can feel safe and secure in which to do this.
Personal, social and emotional development This is pivotal area in Foundation Stage on which all learning hinges.
Communication and Language • Listening and Attention • Understanding instructions and questions • Speaking-Using vocabulary and talk
Physical Development • Using tools & materials: dough, scissors, threading, cooking, chalks, crayons • Large body movementsgames skills, dance or gymnastics
Literacy • Phonics • Reading- individual reading and understanding how stories work and how to retrieve information • Writing-writing for different purposes e. g. lists, stories, recipes
Mathematics • Counting, recognising numbers & sorting • Shapes & patterns • Measuring, weighing, time, money & games
Understanding the World • • Investigation Computing Constructing The world around them • Cultures and beliefs
Expressive arts and design • Use their imagination in art and design, music, dance and role play and stories.
Adult directed activities • This is where we focus on particular skills we want the children to learn or practise.
Child initiated activities Child-initiated learning involves children making decisions about what they want to do, where, with whom, and what resources they will need. During this good choices time children need support from adults in a variety of ways to model learning.
Baseline assessment We assess the children in each of the above areas using: • Information from the home visits and booklets • Observations we make • Individual assessments • Information from previous settings • Discussions with the children • Discussions with parents/carers
Learning Journey Drop-ins • An opportunity to share the children’s Learning Journey with your child • Twice a half term • Will be on different days and times throughout the year
Things to remember! • Water bottle • Show and Tell- your child will be given a specific day • P. E. kit – all clothes named please! • School forms including Home School agreements and Pupil Premium • Read the Newsletter and emails • Library book • PLEASE CHECK BOOK BAGS EVERYDAY
