The Foot Orthosis Project Presented by Juliet De
The Foot Orthosis Project Presented by: Juliet De. Meo and Cristiana Stan
Introduction The Foot Orthosis was an intricate yet enjoyable experience for us future engineers. Our dilemma was a patient with Cerebral Palsy is unable to walk in a normal upright position, they have stiff muscles in one of their legs, creating the problem of them walking on the ball of their foot. In result, the patient's foot is getting damaged. The Foot Orthosis must keep that from happening, allowing the patient to dorsiflex (the upward pointing of the foot) and not plantarflex (downward movement of the foot). It also must allow it to stay in a normal position.
The Beginning of Our Process We had to create the solution with this limited amount of supplies: Bubble Wrap -18 inches Wood - Up to 6 pieces. Each piece was 8”x 3/4 ”x 1/8” thick Cotton line- 2’ Velcro - 1’ 3 pieces of Felt 3 pieces of card stock 2 paper fasteners 2’ of wire 4 rubber bands
Building Time! After we got the a “a-okay” from Mr. Ponterio, we began to build. The orthosis had to fit the tester, so we built around her foot and lower leg. Our idea was to use bubble wrap for the main building material. Using almost all the materials, we created a solution. Even if it didn’t work, it taught us how to think through a problem and find a solution.
Activity 1. 1 Foot Orthosis Instant Design Challenge - Design Process Reflection Table Complete this table as you work on Part 3 of the Foot Orthosis Instant Design Challenge activity. ● In column A, include what your team did for this step in the design process as you worked on the instant design challenge. ● In column B, include what additional things your team could have done related to this step in the design process.
