THE FOOLISHNESS OF NABAL Text: 1 Samuel 25: 1 -44 Memory verse: 1 Samuel 25: 3 “Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb. ” Lesson: The wisdom of God preserves life Thought: I must seek God’s wisdom in all my ways
INTRODUCTION The meaning of Foolishness: • Being unwise • Lacking understanding • Bringing destruction on an individual The meaning of wisdom: • Ability to make right or good judgment • The right application of knowledge • Comes from God to sincere seekers • Precious and it is the most important thing • Preserves lives
DAVID, NABAL AND ABIGAIL Bible passage: 1 Samuel 25: 2 -19, Proverbs 10: 14 David: • He and his followers were running away from Saul • Sent 10 followers to ask provisions from Nabal • He and his followers were kind to Nabal servants • Nabal refused to give the provisions to David’s followers • David was angry and he decided to destroy Nabal’s family, without asking God. Children, anger is dangerous and destructive • David then yielded to Abigail's plea for pardon • God fought for him
NABAL • He was a wealthy man who lived in Carmel • He was cruel and did not care about others • He refused to give David’s followers provisions and he was rude to them • He acted foolishly • He was a stingy man
ABIGAIL • She was Nabal’s wife, she was very wise • When she heard what Nabal did she acted promptly • She went to meet David, gave him and his followers food and plead for pardon • Saved her family from untimely destruction • Prevented David from shedding blood Children, God sends people to us with Godly advice that opens our eyes and protect us from doing wrong, at such a time, we must yield to wise counsel
NABAL FOOLISHNESS DESTROYED HIM Attributes of Nabal: • He was proud, spoke rudely about David and his men • Forgot the good deeds of David • Gave himself to enjoyment instead of helping others • He died suddenly, prematurely, and shamefully • Died a sinner From his life we can see that foolishness destroys and kills. For us not to be like Nabal we must be wise.
BE WISE AND ACT RIGHT Lessons from Abigail and David's lives • Abigail was wise, did not disregard David, acted promptly to prevent destruction • Lesson: we must give attention to information received and act promptly • Abigail was not stingy, she gave to David and his followers provision • Lesson: s friends of Jesus we must always be ready to share what we have with others • David was humble enough to take counsel from an unknown woman • Lesson: humility should be your lifestyle You need wisdom to take decision and act right. Godly friends of Jesus can receive Godly wisdom, seek God today surrender your life to him and become wise girls and boys.
