The Flood n n Read Genesis 6: 1 -7 Why did the Lord judge the earth with the Flood? – Sons of God mingled with the daughters of men and this produced “mighty men” – The Lord saw how wicked man had become: – “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (vs 5)

The Flood n Who were the sons of God referred to in verse 2 – There are different views regarding what happened. n Sons of God could refer to the believing line from Seth who intermarried with unbelieving line OR n Sons of God could refer to the angelic realm that somehow intermingled with humans! – Jude 6 -7

The Flood n What else do we know about the earth at this time? (Gen 6: 11 -12) – It was corrupt before God – It was filled with violence – All flesh had corrupted their way on the earth

The Flood n Whatever happened, it led the Lord to be “sorry” that He had made man on the earth and He was grieved in His heart and led Him to destroy man plus…. . – Beasts – Creeping things – Birds

The Flood In the midst of all this one man stood out; Noah. n How does the Spirit of God describe Noah? (vs 8 -9). n He is described as n – A just man – Perfect – He walked with God

The Flood n How long was man corrupting his way on the earth prior to the flood? – Ussher (an Irish bishop) believed that the world was created in 4004 BC. – Based upon his meticulous calculations he estimated that the Flood took place in 2348 BC, 1656 years after the creation.

The Flood n What were the physical conditions like prior to the Flood? – Based upon Gen 1 vs 2, there was a substantial amount of water vapor in the atmosphere covering the earth. – “A mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground” Gen 2: 6

The Flood n The Lord instructed Noah to build an ark. What do we know about the physical construction of the ark? – Gopherwood – Cover the rooms both on the inside and outside with pitch – Size n n n 300 cubits long 50 cubits wide 30 cubits high – Had 1 window – It had a door in its side – It had 3 decks

The Flood n Noah was instructed to bring his family and 2 of every sort of living thing into the Ark (male & female) (6: 19): – – – n Birds Animals Every creeping thing He also had to collect the food for both himself and for all of them as well

The Flood n Genesis 7 : 1 – How does this apply to us today?

The Flood n He was instructed to take in: – 7 of every clean animal – 2 of every unclean animal – 7 of every kind of bird

Flood The Lord instructed Noah to enter the ark but he had to wait 7 days before the rain came!(7: 4). n Noah had never seen rain since up until now rain had never fallen on the earth! n – Gen 2: 5 -6

The Flood n Where did all the water come from to cause the Flood? – Answer (Gen 7: 11) n “all the fountains of the great deep were broken up and the windows of heaven were open” n From both beneath and above!

The Flood n How high were the waters on the earth? – “the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered. The waters prevailed 15 cubits (approx 22. 5 ft) upward, and the mountains were covered. ” Gen 7: 19 -20

The Flood n The Bible indicates that the flood was global. – “all flesh died that moved on the earth…all that was on dry land died” Gen 7: 21 -22 n n n If the Flood was local, why did Noah have to build an Ark? He could have walked to the other side of the mountains and missed it. If the Flood was local, why did God send the animals to the Ark so they would escape death? There would have been other animals to reproduce that kind if these particular ones had died. If the Flood was local, why was the Ark big enough to hold all kinds of land vertebrate animals that have ever existed? If only Mesopotamian animals were aboard, the Ark could have been much smaller. (Creation, 1999)

The Flood n n n If the Flood was local, why would birds have been sent on board? These could simply have winged across to a nearby mountain range. If the Flood was local, how could the waters rise to 15 cubits (8 meters) above the mountains (Genesis 7: 20)? Water seeks its own level. It couldn’t rise to cover the local mountains while leaving the rest of the world untouched. 2 If the Flood was local, people who did not happen to be living in the vicinity would not be affected by it. They would have escaped God’s judgment on sin. 3 If this happened, what did Christ mean when He likened the coming judgment of all men to the judgment of ‘all’ men (Matthew 24: 37– 39) in the days of Noah? A partial judgment in Noah’s day means a partial judgment to come (Creation, 1999).

The Flood n How long did the Flood last? – It rained for 40 days and 40 nights – Waters prevailed for 150 days (7: 24) – Noah was 600 yrs old when he went into the ark (Gen 7: 6) n 600, 2 nd month, 17 th day of the month (7: 11) water came – Noah was 601 when he went out of the ark n n 601, 2 nd month, 27 th day of the month (8: 14 -16) He was in the ark for more than 1 year.

The Flood n What were the physical conditions like after the Flood? – See Gen 8: 22

Flood n What were the major differences in the way Man interacted with the creation after the flood? – Animals feared man (9: 2) – Man was now permitted to eat meat (9: 34) – Human government established (9: 5 -6)

The Flood n The major features of the covenant that God made with Noah. – The covenant was with Noah, his descendants and with every living creature (9: 9 -10). – Promise that there would never again be another world wide flood to destroy the earth (9 : 11).

The Flood n Where did the water come from for the Flood? Some Christians believe the following: – “The Bible tells us that water came from two sources: below the earth and above the earth. Evidently, the source for water below the ground was in great subterranean pools, or “fountains” of fresh water, which were broken open by volcanic and seismic (earthquake) activity. ” Ham & Lovett (2007)

The Flood n Where did all the water go after the Flood? – “Simply put, the water from the Flood is in the oceans and seas we see today. Three-quarters of the earth’s surface is covered with water. – As even secular geologists observe, it does appear that the continents were at one time “together” and not separated by the vast oceans of today. The forces involved in the Flood were certainly sufficient to change all of this. ” Ham & Lovett (2007)
