The First New Deal 1933 -1935 First 100 days – over 10 pieces of legislation passed.
EBRA Emergency Banking Relief Act • Banks were inspected under this act by the Treasury Department and those that were stable could reopen.
CCC Civilian Conservation Corps • The most popular New Deal “make work” programs. Hired young men aged 1825 to work on conservation projects.
FERA Federal Emergency Relief Agency • Federal money was given to states for direct relief for the people.
AAA Agricultural Adjustment Act • Limited farm surplus by limiting production. • Set up banks to lend money at low interest rates. • (Struck down by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional because of a provision in it)
FDIC Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation • Insured bank deposits.
TVA Tennessee Valley Authority • Developed the resources of the TN Valley and built a series of dams on the river.
HOLC Home Owners Loan Corporation • Provided mortgage loans at low interest to non-farm homes who could make their mortgage payments.
CWA, PWA, and WPA Civil Works Administration, Public Works Administration, and Works Progress Administration • CWA – “Make” work for the unemployed. (1933) • PWA – Established public works projects to provide employment and increase business activity. (1933) • WPA – (2 nd New Deal) – 1935 – Provided for large-scale national work programs.
SEC Securities and Exchange Commission • Supervised the stock market and eliminated dishonest practices such as insider trading practices. • Insider trading means having information that all stockholders don’t have and acting on that information.
FHA Federal Housing Authority • Assured bank loans for construction and repair of rundown homes.
Second New Deal Programs 1935 - 1938
REA Rural Electrification Administra -tion • Provided affordable electricity for isolated rural areas.
NYA National Youth Administra tion • Provided job training for unemployed youth and part-time jobs for needy in schools and colleges.
NLRB National Labor Relations Board • Established by the National Labor Relations Act – aka The Wagner Act – established to settle employer-employee differences and guarantee the right of labor to collectively bargain with management – outlawed blacklists.
SSA Social Security Act • Provided a pension for retired workers and their spouses and aided people with disabilities.
FLSA Fair Labor Standards Act • Established a minimum wage and a maximum number of hours in the work week for the entire country. Set rules for the employment of workers under 16.
