The First APUSH Skill

§ HIPP – is an acronym for a formula to analyze historical primary documents

§ HIPP – is an acronym for a formula to analyze historical primary documents § This is a very important skill that we will practice throughout the year. It will feature prominently on three parts of the APUSH test: § The Document-Based Question (DBQ) § The Short Answer Questions (SAQs) § And all Multiple Choice questions

§ HIPP gives you a framework through which to analyze documents, especially for the

§ HIPP gives you a framework through which to analyze documents, especially for the DBQ, but also for the Multiple Choice and SAQs. § If you are able to find an H, I, P, and P for each document on the APUSH test, it will help you answer questions about the document and help you to properly analyze it in your writing. § Better analysis = Better history and better scores

§ H – Historical Context § Who created it? When was it created? What

§ H – Historical Context § Who created it? When was it created? What does it say about the broader time period? What makes it significant for the specific event and the broader scope of American History? § I – Intended Audience § Who was the author targeting? How did they want the writer to react? Could this show signs of bias on the part of the author? Was the author purposefully writing disinformation? § P – Purpose § Why was the source produced at this time and for whom? What was the intended outcome § P - Point of View § What is the author’s point of view? Does the author have any characteristics that would give insight to their purpose or intended audience? Could their point of view indicate bias?

Submit what you can and we will go over this during the first week of class
