The final phase of Guayasamín’s work, known as "La ternura" (The Tenderness, 1988 -1999), focuses on themes of compassion and love. This phase is dedicated to his mother and includes images of mothers with their children. Through this theme he emphasizes the importance of protecting life and working towards the improvement of mankind. The period also reflects the artist’s search for reconciliation after a life of fighting injustices. In these works Guayasamín employed a much brighter color palette than those used in his previous phases. Due to his lifelong work to expose the plight of the downtrodden indigenous masses, Guayasamín is considered the pioneer of "indigenist expressionism. ” המשפחה La Familia

Perhaps the grandest element of Guayasamin´s artistic legacy is a massive construction on a hill overlooking Quito, ¨La Capilla Del Hombre ¨ (The Chapel of Man). This great, square, brick structure, crowned with a central cone, is imposing from outside, but the interior is even more impressive. The room must be about 40 meters by 40 meters, the ceiling supported by red steel girders around a central dome. At the centre, a small spherical window opens to the sky, and surrounding this opening are depictions of skeletal figures, some collapsed, some reaching upwards with spindly limbs like seaweed. There are two floors, the lover visible from above via a circular opening directly below the dome. On the lower floor stands a circular red platform with a flame burning at the centre, glaring upward at the skylight like a great bloodshot eye. A vast mural overlooks the lower chamber, a condor clinging with claws to the back of a bull. This ritual is actually practiced in some indigenous communities in Ecuador. The huge bird is strapped to the back of the enraged bull and forced to ride the beast around the ring. It ´s a rather cruel ceremony to western eyes, but even so the symbolism of the magnificent native bird wounding the imported Spanish bull is unlikely to be lost on anyone.
