Samuel Bak nasceu em Vilna, Polônia, em 12 de agosto de 1933. Ele é um pintor e escritor judeu que sobreviveu ao Holocausto. Durante a invasão alemã, em setembro de 1939, e com a ocupação de Vilna em 1941, Samuel e sua família tiveram que se mudar para o gueto estabelecido para a população judaica em Vilna. Com a idade de nove anos ele apresentou sua primeira exposição dentro do gueto. Samuel e sua mãe escaparam da morte buscando refúgio em um convento beneditino e foram os únicos sobreviventes da família. Depois da guerra, Samuel continuou pintando no campo de desabrigados em Landsberg , Alemanha, e foi enviado para Munique para estudar com o professor Blocherer (1945 -1948). Em 1966 retornou a Israel, onde permaneceu até 1974. A partir desta data até 1993, viveu em Nova York, Paris e Lausanne , na Suíça. Em 1993 instalou-se definitivamente em Boston, nos Estados Unidos. Em 2001, publicou um livro com suas memórias, “Painted in Words”. Em 2002 recebeu o “ German Herkomer Cultural Prize”. Atualmente, o artista continua a lidar com a expressão artística da destruição e desumanização que compõem suas memórias de infância. A coleção de obras de Samuel Bak está em exposição permanente na “Pucker Gallery” em Boston, e muitas exposições de suas obras de Arte são realizadas nos principais museus e galerias internacionais Memorial, 1986

Biography : Samuel Bak was born in Vilnius, Poland, on August 12, 1933. He is a Jewish painter and writer who survived the Holocaust. During the German invasion, on September 1939, and with the occupation of Vilnius in 1941, Samuel and his family had to move to the ghetto established to the Jewish population in Vilnius. At the age of nine, he exhibited for the first time inside the ghetto. Samuel and his mother escaped death seeking refuge in a Benedictine Convent and they were the only survivors of the family. After the war, Samuel continued to paint in a homeless camp in Landsberg , Germany , and was sent to Munich to study with the professor Blocherer (1945 -1948). He attended the local museums and became familiar with the German Expressionism. In 1948 they moved to Israel, where Samuel studied Art in the “Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design”, in Jerusalem. After military service, he spent three years (1956 -1959) at the “École Nationale des Beaux-Arts ” in Paris, and received the first prize of the “America-Israel Cultural Foundation ”. In 1959 he went to Rome, where he made a solo exhibition at the “Robert Schneider Gallery”, and exhibited also in the “Carnegie International ” in Pittsburgh. In 1966 he came back to Israel were he remained until 1974. From this date until 1993 he lived in New York, Paris and in Lausanne , Switzerland. In 1993 Bak settled permanently in Boston, United States. In 2001 he published a book of his memories, “Painted in Words”. In 2002 he received the “German Herkomer Cultural Prize”. Nowadays , the artist continues to deal with the artistic expression of destruction and deshumanization which make up his childhood memories. The collection of the works of Samuel Bak is in permanent exhibition at the “Pucker Gallery” in Boston, and many exhibitions of his Art works are held in major museums and international galleries.
