The First Immigrants • The first recorded immigrants that began settling in the Americas are the European colonists of 1607 • The two most common reason they came to the Americas was to escape religious persecution and for financial gain
The Birth of America • The American colonies declared independence to accomplish many things including to be free of taxes and to engage in fair trade • The country was born around the principles that all men are created equal and have fair rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
First Immigration Laws • First immigration law was created in 1891 and titled, The Immigration Act. • “The federal government assumed direct control of inspecting, admitting, rejecting, and processing all immigrants seeking admission to the United States with the Immigration Act of 1891”

The ‘Zero-Tolerance’ Policy • One of the most recent immigration policies that have been created by Donald Trump • General purpose is to discourage illegal immigration by splitting parents and children that are caught
‘Zero-Tolerance’ Process Adults and children are processed separately Children transferred to HHS ORR custody for appropriate care Families reunified and deported Individuals presented before a federal judge Transferred to ICE A sponsor is located for the child Individuals seek asylum or other protections
Policy Effectiveness • Illegal boarder crossing has increased 203% from March 2017 to March 2018
Childcare Ethics • 49, 100 Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) were cared for and referred to sponsors in 2018 • There are unconfirmed reports of bad living conditions for the first 72 hours in custody
Summary • This country was founded by people who wanted freedom and prosperity • Over time our immigration laws have become more selective and difficult to get pass • It is now to the point that we are using fear to discourage illegal immigration
What Can We Do? • Provide better living conditions for children if the bad conditions do in fact exist • Create a new policy that will encourage legal entrance into the country
