The Eucharist Mass and Holy Communion

Prayer: Last Supper Luke 22 14 -20 Last Supper: Luke 22: 14 -20 Points

Prayer: Last Supper Luke 22 14 -20 Last Supper: Luke 22: 14 -20 Points to Stress: 1. This is the same thing we do at Mass. Do this in memory of me means we actually go back to the event of the crucifixion and sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Mass is kind of like time travel! 2. Jesus takes the bread and says, “This is my body, which will be given for you. ” This is really Jesus’ body and blood, soul and divinity! 14 When the hour came, he took his place at table with the apostles. 15 He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover * with you before I suffer, 16 for, I tell you, I shall not eat it [again] until there is fulfillment in the kingdom of God. ” i 17 Then he took a cup, * gave thanks, and said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; 18 for I tell you [that] from this time on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes. ” 19* j Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me. ” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you. k Example Meditation: When the hour came, he took his place at table with the apostles. Imagine you are sitting around the table with Jesus. Maybe you’re sitting next to him. Do you smell all the food cooking? Are you excited for this holiday celebration? It might be like your Christmas dinner with your family. Jesus said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, for I tell you, I shall not eat it again until there is fulfillment in the kingdom of God. ” Look at Jesus in the face. How does he say these words? He is excited, but he is also sad. He is happy, but also serious. Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; for I tell you that from this time on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes. ” He is speaking mysteriously and talking about the kingdom of God. Something important is about to happen. His face is full of emotion and love. Then he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me. ” Have you heard these words before? In the Mass? Remember the last time you heard the priest say those words. And Jesus likewise took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you. ” You watch as Jesus raises the bread and the wine, just the same as at Mass. He says he will shed his blood for you, and he wants you to take and eat and drink his body and blood. Remember the last time you received Holy Communion at Mass. Think of Jesus looking at you like he was in this passage. That is how he looks at you every Mass. Full of love and emotion. He is so excited to be so close to you!
