Lyrics Connect these lyrics with the big ideas of your philosopher Citation from primary source that makes this connection (give page number). Kant says that Enlightenment comes with daring to think for ourselves. “Sapere Aude! [Dare to know!] Have the courage to use your own intelligence!” (p. 52) Like Kant, this song equates not thinking for ourselves, not speaking up, with slavery (or a lack of freedom) for ourselves and others. Enlightened thinking and speech is equated with freedom, or liberty. “Here we have restrictions on freedom everywhere. Which restriction is hampering enlightenment, and which does not, or even promotes it? I answer: The public use of a man’s reason must be free at all times, and this alone can bring enlightenment among men. ” (p. 53) Gradually, over time, if people begin to think for themselves and act on these thoughts things will be better – literally “brighter” or more “enlightened”. “A public can only arrive at enlightenment slowly…we do have indications that this field of endeavor is being opened up for men to work freely and reduce gradually the hindrances preventing a general enlightenment and an escape from self-caused immaturity” (p. 53). So, if we all stand up, look around at what we do If we all take some time about a personal point of view But I swear as long as I live Gonna try to make a change ‘Cause this country is too beautiful For slavery and chains Maybe then, in time, everything is gonna change And the light is gonna shine on a better day. Kant seemed to optimistically agree when he described a gradual enlightenment, and believed society was already on the path toward that enlightenment.
