How does it all end? In Lesson 12 you looked at Act 3 scene 5 and the desperate situation that Juliet finds herself in, being forced by her parents to marry Paris against her wishes or be evicted from the house. In Act 4 the Friar agrees to help Juliet, coming up with a plan to help her fake her death and be reunited with Romeo. Unfortunately, it doesn’t go to plan and Romeo never receives the message! Romeo also arrives shortly afterwards as he thinks that Juliet is dead. Paris goes to attack Romeo does not want to fight him and says he thinks of the Capulets as his own family and begs him to leave. Paris does not, they fight, and Paris is slain.

Act 5, Scene 3 The Prince wants to know what has happened, so Friar Lawrence and the Nurse explain all that has passed. He then tells the assembled crowd that, “All are punish’d” (all have paid for their mistakes). Capulet calls Montague towards him, referring to him as “brother, ” and asks for his hand. Montague states that he will erect a pure gold statue in Juliet’s form— as long as Verona stands, so too will her monument. Capulet says he’ll erect a statue of Romeo, too, so that both victims of their feud are honored.
