Elizabethan Theatre ● During the early part of the 16 th century, there was two distinct types of theatre in England. One was represented by small groups of professional actors who performed in halls, inn, or marketplaces. ● The second type of theatre, in the London area, was made up of amateurs, usually university students, performing for the royal court and assorted gentry. ● The stage was probably set with buildings made of laths, covered with painted canvas, with cloud borders masking the upper part of the acting area. ● In 1576 the first permanent public theatre, called simply the Theatre, was erected by the actor James Burbage. ● The building boom continued until the of the century; the Globe, where Shakespeare’s were first performed, was built in 1599 with lumber from the demolished Theatre.
