The Election of 1968

Candidates Richard Nixon Promised to restore law and order to a cities, that had been torn down by riots and crime Promised to end the draft He felt that ending the draft would effectively get the anti war vote on his side since there was no fear of going to war now

Candidates Hubert Humphrey Promised to continue the to expand the Great Society welfare programs Johnson had started Also promised to continue to improve civil rights Never really took a side on the war in fear the Johnson would undermine his peace ideas This upset the anti war voters

Candidates George Wallace Same old George Wallace as before He believed in segregation in the south Really made this race a tight one and received the most votes by a third party no third-party candidate has won an entire state's electoral votes since

The Race After the Democratic Convention polls said that Humphrey trailed Nixon by double digits It seemed hopeless he would win with Wallace and him sharing a lot of the votes in the south Then the “Halloween Peace” came and Humphrey took an anti war stance on Vietnam and gave his campaign a much needed boost Nixons response is to get the support of the South Vietnamese and tell them that a Republican in office would be better for peace than a democrat This works and Nixon wins
