The Elbow and Radioulnar Joints Anatomy and Physiology

The Elbow and Radioulnar Joints Anatomy and Physiology of Human Movement 420: 050

The Elbow and Radioulnar Joints l l Usually grouped together due to close anatomical relationship Elbow joint movements may be clearly distinguished from those of the radioulnar joints Often grouped together due to proximity Entirely different l l Elbow joint distal attachment: l l Structurally = 2, functionally = 1 Ulna Radioulnar joint distal attachment: l Radius

Objectives l l l Bones, bony landmarks and joints Muscles Movements

Objectives l l l Bones, bony landmarks and joint Muscles Movements

Movements l Flexion: l l Movement of forearm to shoulder by bending the elbow to decrease its angle Extension: l Movement of forearm away from shoulder by straightening the elbow to increase its angle

Movements l Pronation l l Internal rotary movement of radius on ulna that results in hand moving from palm-up to palm-down position Supination l External rotary movement of radius on ulna that results in hand moving from palm-down to palm-up position

FLEXION l Superior movement of the forearm in the sagittal plane

EXTENSION l Inferior movement of the foremarm in the sagittal plane

EXTENSION

EXTENSION l Triceps l l Long head also extends the shoulder Anconeus
