Nouns • Person • Place • Thing • Idea
Pronouns • A word that replaces a noun. • Example: • Too wordy: Tommy likes frogs. Tommy catches the frogs in a nearby swamp. Sometimes Tommy brings Tommy’s sister, Sally. • Better: Tommy likes frogs. He catches them in a nearby swamp. Sometimes he brings his sister, Sally.
Adjective • Describes a noun • *Adjectives answer the questions: “What kind? ”, “Which one? ”, “How many? ” 1. What kind? • beautiful tiger 2. Which one? • that tiger 3. How many? • two tigers
Verb • a word that expresses action or otherwise helps to make a statement. • The girls and the bunny skip over the hills. • The bunny is evil.
Adverb • A word that modifies (describes) a verb, adjective, or another adverb. It also answers the questions how, where, when, to what extent. 1. How is he laughing? • The man is laughing loudly. 2. Where did the kitten run? • The kitten ran upstairs. 3. When will we have the quiz? • We will have a quiz on this tomorrow. 4. To what extent did she run? • She ran so well.
Preposition • a word that shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to some other word in the sentence. • The present is in the box. • The bow is on the box. • The ribbon is around the box.
Conjunction • A word that joins words or groups of words • Stan and the alligator did not get along. • Stan wanted to befriend the alligator, but it had other plans!
Interjection • An exclamatory word that expresses emotion. • Ah! You scared me! • Oops! I lost my hair!
